Problems installing Plextor PX-AV100U Video capture device

After my failed attempts to load audio driver for Adaptec video
capture device I bought Plextor PX-AV100U hoping that this device
will have better drivers.

Now, I am having a different problem. The instruction says to load
the drivers first and then connect the device. The device is USB 2.0
compatible device. When I connect the device I get "Found New HW"
wizard but when I continue to load the driver it never finds the
driver. I tried many things but no help. The drivers for this device
are not in .inf file format on CD. To load the driver I had to run
.exe which came on the CD. Thus, I can not manually look for driver
and load it from CD.

I think there is something wrong with the Windows XP Home edition.
I have installed all of the windows update. Yesterday, I tried to
uninstall last 6 or 7 updates to see if that would fix the problem.
That did not help. Next, I am thinking of uninstalling SP2 to see
if that fixes the problem.

Before I do anything drastic I want to find out if anyone else
had problems similar to mine. I would also like to learn about
new tricks etc. Feel free to post any ideas you may have.

I have contacted Plextor customer service as well. They gave me
couple of suggestions which did not help.

Note : I am having very similar problem with the DVD and CD drives
I have in the system. Fortunately, these drives does not need drivers
and hence they work just fine (I simply press cancel when the new
HW found wizard shows up) but for video capture device it does need
driver for it to capture video.

I have Dimension 3000 with 3 GHz Pentium 4 with HT. Windows XP has
all of the latest updates (including SP2). I also have Nero 6.x
loaded which came with the DVD drive.

Thanks.

bepeaceful,

Please repost this message on the Photo and Video Editing board. Maybe other video capture customers can help.

Update on this issue. The problem is resolved but it involved re-installing
Windows XP. Dell has a utility to restore the system back to the factory
installation. This was my last resort. I also talked to Plextor customer
support last Friday. After re-loading drivers etc. the customer support
engineer told me that there is something wrong with my OS and will need
to re-install it to get it to work.

I did that. The Dell's system restore SW is cool but re-installing ton
of other stuff including XP updates was not cool.
