Processor: 2.4ghz vs. 1.86ghz

Question

I currently have a four year old Dimension 4550 with a 2.4 ghz processor.  On an XPS 410, will the duo core 1.86ghz technically be faster then my current 2.4ghz or do I need to stick with 2.4 to make sure I don't lose any ground?   Thanks.

from my research I believe the c2d is supposed to be faster as well as more energy efficient.

Don't get confused the by the GHz rating. It is not a good measure of the speed anylonger. I can tell you that the new Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz is probably faster than 2 if not 3 of those old 2.4GHz CPU's put together. The E6300 even comes close to beating the Pentium D 960(3.6GHz) CPU's.

Yeah these guys are right on the money the Core 2 Duo 1.86GHz will annihilate the old 2.4ghz processor. I have a 3ghz pentium 4 system that is just over a year old and just bought a 2.13ghz core 2 duo system and have to say that the core 2 duo makes the 3ghz p4 seem pathetic in comparison. You will not be losing any ground you will in fact be jumping forward by leaps and bounds. I notice almost anything I do now is quicker and more responsive and really my pentium 4 system and core 2 duo systems are almost identical other than the processor. I tested both of the systems which had the same video card a 7800gt, same 2gb of ram running at the same speed, and the core 2 duo system continues to impress me.

I played a lot of the battlefield 2 game on my 3ghz computer and the frame rate would be somewhat erratic at times going anywhere from 70 frames per second to under 30 frames per second, but now with the core 2 duo it stays in the 90's fps mostly and never see it drop below 60 fps using the same settings as before. You will notice improvements across the board with a core 2 over what you have. From quicker boot times to just about anything else. It's worth it, trust me.

I can't wait to get my XPS 410 with the E6400 & 2 gigs of ram, along with the 20inch widescreen. Im upgrading from A 800 mhz Compaq with 128MB of ram. think i will notice a diffrence LOL
