RAM upgrade for Dell Dimension 5100
The manual says memory upgrade for this desktop is only 400-MHz (PC2 3200)and 533-MHz (PC2 4200)DDR2, but Crucial website says "Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-8500,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 2GB per slot". Why do I see such a huge difference? Has anybody has experience with this desktop?

The naming DDR2 conventions are confusing -
DDR2 400MHz PC2-3200
DDR2 533MHz PC2-4200/4300
DDR2 667MHz PC2-5300/5400
DDR2 800MHz PC2-6400
DDR2 1066MHz PC2-8500/8600
The Dimension 5100/5150/E510 systems supports 4GBs of Non-ECC DDR2 -
400MHz PC2-3200
533MHz PC2-4200/4300
667MHz PC2-5300/5400 memory will work but is clocked down to 533MHz
800MHz PC2-6400 memory will work but is clocked down to 533MHz
1066MHz PC2-8500 might work at 533MHz
The Crucial website is incorrect in stating that 8GBs will work.

The Crucial web site has an "asterisk" with the listed max memory:
"Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-8500,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 2GB per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory"
The largest "Kit" they list is 4GB.

Thanks guyz, this has helped me. I bought Crucial CT12864AA53E.16F. I wanted to upgrade the RAM and remove both the PCI Cards (one with phone/fax modem and other with S-video in ports & Coaxial) and install PCI firewire 1394 and PCI wireless cards.
