Random rebooting 560MT W7 64bit
I have an increasingly frustrating random rebooting problem with my new 560MT, which came pre-installed with Windows 7 64-bit.
The problem does not seem to be a hardware issue. I can replicate it very often by visiting a certain website... However it does happen spontaneously using other programs. It's worst on IE8, less of a problem when using Chrome. Photoshop also seems to be a trigger.
There is never a BSOD, even though I have unchecked the appropriate box to stop rebooting. It simply restarts and there is never an explanation as to the acuse of the problem.
I have run Dell's hardware diagnostics, no problems revealed.

It would seem to be a hardware problem and possibily a memory problem. Photoshop is memory intensive as are some web sites with lots of media. It could also be a video issue but I would more suspect the memory.
First suggestion is to reseat the memory modules. Reseat - with the PC powered off, open the case and remove each memory module - one at a time and then reinstall making sure the module is correctly and fully seated. If that doesn't make any difference, try running with half of the memory modules and see if that makes a difference - if not, try the other half.

Thanks, that's a positive suggestion. Will try it and report back.

I'm having similar issues with a new XPS9000. Random rebooting. I've run the Dell PSA diagnostics with no issues found. Windows Memory Diagnostics reports a memory issue. MemTest86+ also reports a memory module issue, however Dell says that it's a Windows 7 issue and suggested a re-install. I argued with them saying that should be a last resort, however, they failed to see my logic since obviously there was no cost of hardware involved. So we proceeded to do a reinstall ending at 11:30pm last night. I shut down and went to bed. This morning I started up to do a backup of the clean install and poof. Rebooted with a blue screen. Event log shows the exact same error as prior to the reinstall. So all that time wasted. I'm running MemTest86+ again to try and isolate the faulty SIMM. Dell is suppose to call me back today to check on things. I'm very interested in what they have to say about this now. They promised me that Windows 7 was the issue and that reinstalling would correct ALL of the problems.

Dell failed to call me back. AGAIN. So I started another chat session to relay my anger over this mess. I finally got resolution to the problem but it took threatening them to pack the whole thing up and send it back. They then said they would send me some new memory. I said, no, you'll send a new motherboard and memory. They didn't want too, but a few more threats and they were on the boat. The next day I received a phone call arranging the in-home service to replace the MOBO and memory. Started up, restored my back up I did prior to the Windows 7 reinstall and I;ve been running fine since with zero reboots. Threaten them. It's the only way to get service. Sad. Dell used to be a reputable company....

I'm having the same problem as well as are multiple other folks who posted to "Inspiron 560 random shut downs". Does anyone have a link to a good / accurate free memory utility that can be used for memory testing?

For Windows 7, the Windows Memory Diagnostics was the first to report memory errors, even though Dell didn't care. It's tough convincing them to recognize any utility results that aren't from their own diagnostics.

Mine was the same way; just doing random stuff. Mostly happened while using IE surfing. I'd push it and play a lot of intensive games to try and make it fail but it wouldn't happen. Run the Windows 7 utility first since it doesn't require anything special. It will restart and then run. The Memtest utilities require you to make a bootable CD. The sites have the ISO you can burn to a CD using Nero or Roxio or whatever you have that will burn an image. Let them run for an hour or so as a good test. Good luck and hope you get yours resolved also. It's very trying to spend money on a product and then have to waste your own time troubleshooting it.

Thanks Scott I'll give that a go and see what kind of result I get. My shut down problem is very intermitent and difficult to pinpoint since the PC can just be sitting there idle and all of a sudden shut down and restart with no advance warnings and there's no regularity to it. 1st shut down was 03/22 about 3 weeks after the machine was delivered. Then it happened again on, 04/05, 04/18, 4/25, 04/30 and 05/10. As I recall I was just surfing random web pages at the time although on this last shut down I was gaming on a website that uses Adobe Flash Player 10 Active X.

Well Scott if memory was causing your problems it's not that obvious in my case. Over 5 hours of memory diagnostic testing last night resulted in zero errors being found. I turned auto-restart off so that the next crash (whenever that happens to be) will hopefully produce a helpful BSOD error message to point me in the right direction so I guess it's a wait and see thing at this point. I still think it could be a power supply issue because when the crash occurs it's just like someone pulled the AC plug out of the wall then immediately plugged it in again. I get no BSOD when the crash happens. Screen just goes black instantly and auto-restart kicks right in after that.

Sounds like a bad joke. " How many motherboards does it take to fix a Dell ? ". Thanks for keeping us posted.

Motherboard, heatsink and fan replaced Thursday night. Updated the BIOS and other drivers from the Dell web site to their recommended versions. Sunday morning - shutdown again! Back on the phones again tomorrow.

oh and turning off the auto restart made no difference - no Blue Screen Of Death seen - just powered off and restarted as before - also no minidump generated so still nothing to go on.

Unbelievable ! Well I've been fortunate so far in that mine hasn't shutdown again since 05/10 but as I posted earlier it was happening every 5 to 13 days so I'm not out of the woods yet by any means. The fact that you didn't get any kind of error messages isn't encouraging at all. I still tend to believe it's a Power Supply issue but I wouldn't change mine out unless Dell would be willling to foot the bill and based on your latest experience they're not there yet.
