Realtek PCLe GBE Family Controller
I have just updated to BT Infinity Broadband. The information tells me how to determine whether this is an N type adapter as I need this for a fibre conection. I have checked this in Device Manager but can find no reference to N. Does anyone know whether it will in fact be an N type.

All it means is that the Router/Hub/Device does wired and wireless to your provider.
802.11N routers are backwards compatible to 802.11B and 802.11G wireless.
802.11B is 11 Meg
802.11G is 54 Meg
802.11N is 150 Meg on 2.4Ghz band
802.11N is 300 Meg on 5.0Ghz band.
The Realtek Wired port can to 10 meg (CAT3) or 100 Meg (CAT5)or 1000 Meg (CAT6) ETHERNET.
1000 Meg Ethernet requires a CAT 6 cable. If you have speed issues with the wire you may need to buy a
more expensive RJ45 cable.
Category 5 cable
Category 5 (CAT5) cable is a multi-pair (usually 4 pair) high performance cable that consists of twisted pair conductors, used mainly for data transmission. Basic CAT5 cable was designed for characteristics of up to 100 MHz. CAT5 cable is typically used for LAN Ethernet networks running at 10 or 100 Mbps. Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) construction makes the cable highly cost-effective for data networks.
Category 5e Cable
Category 5e (CAT5e) cable, also known as Enhanced Category 5, is designed to support full-duplex Fast Ethernet operation and Gigabit Ethernet. The main differences between CAT5 and CAT5e can be found in the specifications. The performance requirements have been raised slightly in the new standard.
CAT5e has stricter specifications for Power Sum Equal-Level Far-End Crosstalk (PS-ELFEXT), Near-End Crosstalk (NEXT), Attenuation, and Return Loss (RL) than those for CAT5. Like CAT5, CAT5e is a 100-MHz standard, but it has the capacity to handle bandwidth superior to that of CAT5. VPI's selection of CAT5e cables feature Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) construction for cost-effective connections.
Category 6 Cable
Category 6 (CAT6) cable provides higher performance than CAT5e and features more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise.
The quality of the data transmission depends upon the performance of the components of the channel. To transmit according to CAT6 specifications, jacks, patch cables, patch panels, cross-connects, and cabling must all meet CAT6 standards. The CAT6 components are tested individually, and they are also tested together for performance. In addition, the standard calls for generic system performance so that CAT6 components from any vendor can be used in the channel.
All CAT6 components must be backward compatible with CAT5e, CAT5, and CAT3. If different category components are used with CAT6 components, then the channel will achieve the transmission performance of the lower category. For instance, if CAT6 cable is used with CAT5e jacks, the throughput will perform at a CAT5e level. VPI offers both Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) and Screened Shielded Twisted Pair (SSTP) CAT6 cables.
Category 6a Cable
Category 6a (CAT6a), also known as Augmented Category 6, requires a cable to operate at a minimum of 500Mhz and provide up to 10 Gigabits of bandwidth. The CAT6a standard also includes a new measurement called Power-Sum Alien Crosstalk to 500 MHz. CAT6a cables will reduce the interference on a 10GBASE-T network caused by Alien Crosstalk thereby improving network performance. VPI's selection of CAT6a cables feature Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) construction for cost-effective connections.

Sorry but I seem to have misled you. I have changed my broadband from British Telecom Broadband (Copper Cable) system to what thety call Infinity which I think uses fibre optic cable. Their website says that in order to take advantage of this faster system the computer needs an n wireless adapter. I have looked in Device Manager (Windows 7) located the device but can see no reference to an 'n'. My computer is a Dell DXP061 64 bit.

Fiber and 802.11N Wireless are 2 different kinds of Connection. You did not include any information as to what Dell Model or Which OS or which service pack or 32 bit vs 64 bit. You did not include any dell part numbers whatsoever.
Mellanox's family of InfiniBand switches is another High Speed connection but its not Fiber its Special cables.

If you have a direct WIRE to your router then the reference to 802.11N does not matter.
They say this because watching a TV signal on less than 150 Meg to 300 Meg speed data can cause choppy stuttering video streams.

So you need an 802.11 N 150 Meg or 300 Meg WIRELESS Adapter.

The adapter is only Half of the issue. You also REQUIRE an 802.11N router.

802.11B is 11 Meg and 802.11 G is 54 Meg. Quite slow compared to 100 Meg or 1000 meg Wire.
If your wireless "Channel" is a low number like 1 - 14 you only have 802.11b OR 802.11G

Ihave followed your instructions and located the Realtek device. I can see no reference to 'n'. The box includes Manufacturer, Location and 'This device is working properly'. I notice your reference to the Router, I do have BT's latest router so I guess that this will be good for the job as it was installed with the upgrade to Infinity. Thanks for all your help.

I really appreciate the advice that you have sent. I have to confess there is much of this that I do not understand. However, you have confirmed to me that the Realtek device is not a wireless adapter. I have downloaded and run Belarc Advisor and this shows no sign of any 'n' device and yet the internet works ok via an ethernet connection to the hub which I am told is 'n'. Does this mean that I do not need an 'n' adapter on the desktop and will only need one on my son's laptop.
