SEVERE problem /w mouse and keyboard after Win XP upgrade - HELP please!
Hello all. I decided to upgrade my Dell Dimension XPS T700R PC to Windows XP from Windows 98. Setup went smoothly, but when Windows booted for the first time, I had no keyboard/mouse. There's a cursor on the screen, but when I move the mouse, it dosen't move. It also won't click. The keyboard won't accept anything, even the "num lock" light won't come on.
I thought, "hmm, must be a keyboard and mouse problem." I tried three different ones and all for naught. I thought, "hmm, must be a ps/2 port problem." I tried to plug my kb/mouse into a USB to PS/2 adaptor so I could plug them into a different port. No good. I then proceeded to hook up an old hard drive with 98 left over on it from a three year old upgrade and see if the ports/keyboard/mouse still worked. Sure enough, all was well.
Then, I decided to reload XP, this time doing a fresh install. I formatted the hard drive, all to no avail. I did a full format, and it still didn't work.
So, I decided to format the drive and reload Windows 98, just to see if the keyboard/mouse just didn't "like" that particular drive. Sure enough, the kb/mouse worked just fine under 98. Then, I ugraded to XP. No go. I am at the end of my rope, I've been building computers for five years and have done everything I know to do.
I tried Microsoft tech support, and explained to them that I could enter no system commands. They then proceeded to tell me to go to Windows Update, which required a mouse and keyboard. So THAT was no help. It could be a driver problem, but how can I fix it if I have no system input?
So I came to the Dell forums.
One side note, if it helps - on the keyboard, when XP is loading, the "num lock" light is on, but at a certain point when it's booting, all three lights, "num lock, caps lock, and scroll lock" all briefly go on, and then all of them go off. I can't turn any of them on again, or enter any system commands. Is Windows XP cutting off power to them for some bizzare reason? We have three computers - I own two (a desktop and laptop) and we have a family computer. The family computer is the one that's acting up. I use XP on the other two, with no problems.
One final note before any of y'all respond - I can at this point enter NO system commands. I cannot run Windows Update, I cannot change drivers, or anything. It's sure a tough problem - at least I can reformat and use 98 if all else fails. Hope someone a lot smarter than me is reading this!

Sadly, I can't help you but you made me day!
The EXACT same thing happened with my 8200 last night. Nothing is working -its word for word exactly as you described. But I wasn't even doing anything new- I just started the computer-no change in programs-nothing out of the ordinary.
If anyone can help, please do, I need my computer :)

My problem is exactly as you explain, except I am trying to install Windows 2000 Pro on a Dell Dimension XPS T600 (IMER0). It came with Win 98.
It's a strange one, I too have tried everything. I reckon it could be a motherboard incompatability issue. I might need a driver update to manually put on the boot disks or a BIOS update (currently A08).
Let's see if anyone out there has got this to work.

Jalba.

No response at all from Dell to any of the posts. That worries me.
It looks like I'll have to buy a new computer, and it might not be Dell as you can't upgrade them!

I don't know if you have since solved the keyboard mouse issue, but I had the same problem on a XPS T450 going from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. After downloading and installing the latest flash bios (A11 for this machine), keyboard and mouse are now working.
