SW Synth volume with Media Player 10
When I run Windows Media Player 10 to play a midi file, the SW Synth volume is automatically knocked down to zero and thus there is no sound unless I manually adjust the volume every time a midi is played.
My system is a new Dimension 9100 with a Unimodem sound device and SigmaTel codecs. I am using Windows Media Player 10.

The "unimodem" sound device is not the sound module. I'm not sure what Dell is using in the 9100 on-board sound.
The Microsoft software synth must be used as the on-board sound does not have a hardware MID Synth like the SoundBlaster sound cards do.
I don't have a fix for the MIDI, I have that problem with the S/PDIF input on my SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinum EX (I have a model with the external I/O box). Everytime I want to use the S/PDIF input I must "unmute" it. I've never found a workaround.
As far as the MIDI, make sure the MS Software MIDI synth is selected as the default device in the Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices. I don't think that the MIDI being "off" is a function of the WMP 10 as there is no option for that in the user options. The Volume Control is a Windows XP application.
