Scan to computer problem

I have a 2002 Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop and recently purchased a HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-One printer which I intend to use wireless.  Router is a Dell 1184 Model WX-6215D and computer has a 802.11 1180PC Wireless,MiniPCI network card.
My problem is that I can send documents, pictures etc to the printer but I cannot scan a picture/document from the printer to the computer.  The error message is always " The scan cannot be performed because another program or computer is using the networked device.  Try again."  The Windows XP is Home Edition and network only has the one computer and one printer.  I've spent approx 3 hours on the phone with HP Technicians and numerous emails trying to solve the problem.  The HP software has been removed and reinstalled twice since the initial installation.  If anyone can provide some insight into a possible solution it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

You cannot scan wirelessly. You must directly cable the all in one to a computer to scan and you will only be able to scan on that computer. Surprised that HP did not tell you that. You cannot scan across a network--only print.

Thank You Marry G..  After you're post I called Office Depot where I bought the printer and the technician there agreed with what you said and apologized for not telling me that when I bought it.  Different person.  One would wonder why the HP guys in India wouln't know that but maybe they only know what's in the computer screen in front of them.  I also was told by Office Depot that they have their own tech support and that would have probably been the route to take.  Thanks

Hi Bill D.  Actually, it is possible to scan wirelessly.  I am able to (at least half wirelessly, anyway).
I have a Dimension 4400.  Wired to a Linksys router.  HP Photosmart 2710  All-in-One connected wirelessly to the Linksys router.  I can scan to the computer without a problem, using the HP Director Program Software that came bundled with the HP 2710.  When I scan, the scanning is done from the HP Director software on the computer, not using the scanner buttons (even though the HP manual says I can do either).
I know this is only scanning half wirelessly (from scanner to router), but my instruction manual states that you can scan completely wirelessly.  Now keep in mind, of course, that I am dealing with a different model All-in One (HP 2710), so I am not an expert on your model.
I don't know how to help you solve your particular problem, but it would seem to be possible.  If I can find any other info that may assist you, I will post back.  Hope my explanation is understandable.  Good luck.

Thank You bbf2530 for you're input.  At least someone can accomplish what I'd like to do.  I agree that the insturctions manual would indicate that one can scan wireless  and throughout all the changing of every setting possible in my computer, still cannot make it scan through my Dell 1184 router.  Seems like if I can send documents/pictures to the printer that the reverse should be true.  Even more amazing is the different opinions about how and if it can be done.  The photosmart 6180 is new to the market so maybe there's a lot to be sorted out.  Again, thanks for your post and maybe the issue isn't dead yet. If I can't scan wireless, I may just scan to device (flash stick) and stick it in the USB port etc.  No more than I use scan it be OK, but I will be using wireless computer to printer.

Hi again, Bill D.  A little more info for you.  As I stated earlier, my Dimension 4400 is connected by ethernet cable, and the HP 2710 is connected wirelessly, to the Linksys wireless router.
What I forgot is that my wife also has her business laptop connected wirelessly to the network.  We did, in the past, scan completely wirelessly to her laptop.  It slipped my mind because we only did it once, over a year ago for testing purposes, when I set up the entire wireless router, wireless printer, wireless laptop, wired desktop network.  She has never had any need to scan again, so please forgive me for my "brain cloud".
Also, I find the message that you are getting, " The scan cannot be performed because another program or computer is using the networked device.  Try again." rather interesting.  It is not saying it cannot be found, or that you are trying to perform an invalid command, etc.  It seems to be "in use", for some reason.  I have a feeling that is the key to your problem. (Duh, aren't I a regular genius?):smileyhappy:
Again, I realize I have a different model Photosmart, but I would think that HP wouldn't go backwards in technology.
Perhaps the printer/scanner itself is defective? Did you just purchase the printer?  Can you bring it back and exchange it?  If not, is it still under warranty?  There must be some underlying problem, since you have reinstalled the software several times.
Let us know how you progress, and good luck.

bbf2530, you may find this interesting.  First, the printer HP Photosmart C6180 from Office Depot is just our a few weeks ago.  I am however, just outside the 14 day return policy.  I do have the HP extended warrenty.  I bought a USB cable today and had decided for the few times I scan documents/pictures I'd connect up the USB cable and get the job done and otherwise use the pinter in the wireless mode.  Well, I got the USB idea to work one and the rest of the time I got various messages like the one above or "The application is currently in use or unavailable.  Close any open programs and try again" Or "An error occurred communicating with the device.  Please insure that the scanning devide is connected properly and try again".  How can you improperly hook up a USB cable?  The good news is that when I'd unhook the cable and try to print wirelessly it worked ok as it had been.  I had given up on HP tech and they on me but I just went back with the above info to see their response.  There is one method that I know works.  I can put a flash stick (may not be the right name) in the printer and scan to that device and then put it in the USB port and put the date in a file etc.  That may wind up being my workable solution.  Doesn't seem right because this is suppost to be a good printer.

Hi again Bill D.  Yes, that is strange.   You would think the USB method should be relatively fool proof.  It it were me, I would contact HP and inform them of this latest development.  I would push for a replacement, as there seems to be some underlying problem, whether hardware or software related.  Either way, you have certainly done all you can to try and fix the problem.  Now it's HP's turn to fix it.  Sure, the flash drive transfer method is workable, but that is not what you paid for when you bought the All-in-One.
Let us know how you make out Bill, and good luck.
