Service Tag- Dim 4550

Just replaced the battery in my backup PC Dim 4550. When i rebooted to go into the System Setup to change the date and time I noticed that the Service Tag info
is missing at the top of the page. BIOS revision is displayed but not the service tag. How do i go about getting my service tag to display again? Reading the info
in the user manual doesn't say anything about losing the service tag entry when replacing the battery. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Update, Dell Tech Support sent me the ASSET utility ver 2.09 and I was able to reenter my Service Tag successfully. My Service Tag is now
displayed in the system BIOS. I had to use the hidden switch in asset to do it. ASSET /s xxxxxxx. Thanks for the replies.

Good Afternoon aviator686,

The best advice is to contact Dell Technical Support when you get a chance.  The service tag numbers generally can not be altered/changed or entered by the end consumer because your warranty is tied to the service tag number.  This number proves that your system is a "valid" Dell unit, so you can not generally change or alter this number.

Best wishes,

Darrell WV

Darrell, thanks for replying. The warranty on the 4550 expired a long time ago but it is still going strong. Never had a problem
with it. I doubt if Technical support will be able to help since it is out of warranty. Have flown into KHTS many times before retiring
from the airlines.

For some models, Dell offers an "asset utility" that allows the user to add the service tag number to CMOS.  I don't see it listed on the drivers/download page for the 4550, so I guess it's not publicly available for this system.

But does it really matter to you?  Having the service tag number in CMOS doesn't do anything, aside from making that number available to software such as Belarc Advisor, etc.  I wouldn't worry about it...

I see there is an asset utility for the dim 4500. I plugged in my service tag # for my 4550 but no asset utility. Just wondering if the asset utility for the 4500
will work on my 4550? Does anyone know if there is an asset utility for the 4550?
