This ME Problem has me worried.
Checkpoints That You Create After September 8, 2001 Do Not Restore Your Computer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to restore a checkpoint that you created after September 8, 2001 in Windows Millennium Edition (Me), the restore procedure does not work after you restart your computer and you may receive the following error message:
Restoration Was Unsuccessful
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the algorithm that is used to calculate the checkpoint file name does not work after September 8, 2001.
RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.
I had this exact problem last month on or around the 18th. The issue continued and finally Windows crashed and would not reboot, even with the ME rescue disk. I know the disk was good, because at first I was able to get Safe Mode running several times. However, it just seemed file after file started corrupting and Scandisk could not repair them. Finally, I had to reformat.
I am worried. Should I wait until I cannot restore anymore or should I go ahead an apply the patch before experiencing the problem, against Microsoft's recommendations?
I could reformatt again, but it is kind of a pain. I would rather not have to do that again so soon.

I was under the impression that this fix was intended for all ME users, unless you had restore disabled and never intended to use it.
Hope this helps,
Ed

When did this patch come out? I haven't heard of this problem before, and the patch has never shown up when I run Windows Update. Please tell me where I can find it and download it, as I rely on System Restore (for a sound night's sleep
Thanks,
Richard

While we're on the subject of updates, though, what do you make of ZDnet's website "updates.cnet.com"? I've run it occasionally, and it always tells me (after scanning my PC) to update things I know I don't even have installed, like ethernet cards, and high-end sound cards, etc. If it's reading my system, wouldn't it know what I have, and don't have?
Uff Da right at ya,
Richard
