USB Network Boot

Hi All,

I have an Optiplex 280 with no floppy drive, I also have a 128 MB Dell memory stick. I have found a utility (mbrtool.exe) which makes my memory stick boot successfully to a C prompt. What I am trying to do is now boot from the usb and load network drivers so I cannect to a network share and run ghost. I have tried copying the network files from my old boot floppy disk and editing the autoexec.bat and config.sys accordingly but this does not work. Does anybody know how to boot and load network drivers from a USB Memory stick, would be very greatful for any help on this.

Thanks..

Dell has a utility to make their keys bootable.  R69131.EXE  ftp://ftp.dell.com/rmsd/R69131.exe

if the drive is bootable on a different system, then try their utility or one from the manufacturer of your key.

I just successfully formatted my Dell USB Key to boot my Dell 4700 to the network and start Ghost.

They way I did this you will need a system with a floppy drive, although there may be other/better ways.  In any event, this worked, so here's what I did.

1) Obtain an MS DOS Boot Floopy.  If you don't have one, go to http://snipurl.com/9hco Bart's Network Boot disk and follow the instructions there to create a Network Boot Disk.  The site is worth checking out for so many other reasons, but this will give you an MS Boot Floppy.

2) Start Ghost Boot Wizard and select your NIC drivers.  When it's time to format the floppy, select "Get MS DOS" and user the Bart's Floppy Disk as the source.  Format the Ghost diskettes with MS DOS.  Set these aside, as you will need them in a few minutes

3) Download HP's USB Disk Storage Format Tool here:  http://snipurl.com/9hcl - dont' worry, it works with lots of USB Keys, not just HPs.  Run the tool and select Create a DOS Startup Disk, and select "using DOS system files located at..." type in A:\, then  put your MS Dos boot disk (not the Ghost disk, but the other MS DOS Boot Disk) in your A drive and click Start.

4) Copy all the files from your two Ghost boot disks onto the USB Key.  Make sure you are veiwing all files, including hidden and system files, and that everything gets copied over.

5) Edit your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files.  Here's what mine ended up looking like:

CONFIG.SYS

DEVICE=C:\net\protman.dos /I:\net
DEVICE=c:\net\dis_pkt.dos
DEVICE=C:\net\e100b.dos
LASTDRIVE = Z

AUTOEXEC.BAT

@echo off
SET TZ=GHO+08:00
prompt $p$g
\net\netbind.com
MOUSE.COM
echo Loading...

echo Insert Ghost boot disk 2 (containing Ghost.exe)
echo To run Ghost.exe from a hard disk or CD, press Ctrl-C at the following prompt
echo then change to the appropriate drive letter and type 'Ghost'
pause
if not exist c:\ghost\ghost.exe goto USBBOOT
c:
goto GHOSTFND

:GHOSTFND
cd \ghost
echo Loading...
GHOST.EXE
goto END

:END

Save the changes, and you should be good to go!
