Unable to move cursor with keyboard or mouse
I have a XPS400, approximately 5 years old. Yesterday, the cursor quit responding to mouse or keyboard. This had happened a couple of times before but rebooting the PC corrected the problem. This time when I rebooted the cursor is centered in middle of screen and cannot be moved by either the keyboard or mouse. I have rebooted 3 times with the same results. Everything else seems to load properly. There is no light on the keyboard but the light on the mouse is on. Also, there is a black USB symbol showing up in the bar at the bottom of the screen.
Appreciate any comments you may have.

What version of WIndows?
Are these wired or wireless USB mouse and keyboard? Does keyboard still work when you type something?
If wireless:
Have you replaced the batteries in mouse and keyboard lately?
Have you tried re-syncing the mouse and keyboard with their base stations?
Wired or wireless:
Have you tried connecting mouse and keyboard to different rear USB ports?
Reboot and press F8 before Windows starts to load. Select Safe Mode. If mouse/keyboard work correctly when you get to the desktop, something loading at startup may be the problem.
Does the mouse have its own drivers? (eg, did it come with an installation CD?).

Windows version XP.
Keyboard and mouse are wired, keyboard will work for 3-5 seconds at start up and then go dead.
Yes, have tried other rear USB,s.
Tried to reboot and press F8 - keteyboard quit before I could complete safe mode startup.
Mouse came preloaded from Dell.

Reboot from your Dell Windows Reinstallation CD. If you press R at first screen does launch Recovery Console launch? If you get to the C:\ prompt, can you type in anything? eg:
chkdsk c: /r
Press Enter
That will run a check on the hard drive and attempt to fix any errors. It may take a long while so have patience.
If that doesn't fix the problem, you may need to run a Repair Reinstall of XP. But you'll need a CD that has the same version of Windows as is on the hard drive. An SP2 CD won't work if the hard drive has SP3...
