Upgrade capability for Inspiron 530s

Hi guyz~ I own 530s. Actually I wanna replace the motherboard with this one : GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard Just wonder if the size fits to 530s which is a slim-type.

ATX motherboards will not fit into the Inspiron 530s case, a Micro ATX motherboard is needed, plus both, the Dell 530s case and motherboard have propierary features and undocumented front panel wiring.  

The GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboards, require a EPS/ATX12V 8-pin connector, that the 530s power supply does not have.

If a non-Dell motherboard is installed, you would need to buy a new retail, or OEM copy of windows, Dell's OEM copies are tied to their BIOS and will not activate.

Upgrading is much more complicated thing than I expected..

Actually, my plan included changing the power supply and cpu, too.

but since the motherboard cannot fit in the case, I think I need to change my plan..

And, I actually own windows, so OS doesn't matter :)

Neither of the power supplies, you linked to, will not fit into the 530s 'Slim' case, due to the constraints of the slim case, only TFX power supply units are compatible,  that are usually either 250w, or 300w.

To upgrade the 'Slim' case 530s, you would be better advised to buy a new case and transfer all the useable parts from the 530s to it.

The mainboard and CPU should bolt in (front panel, front panel audio, and front panel USB look to be standard), and a new power supply is not necessary, as  the E8400 is rated at 65 watts, just like the lower processors.

For that matter, the E8400 would likely drop in to your existing mainboard. What's wrong with your existing board that you want to replace it?

It may well be a mainboard failure, in which case you're wise to replace it.

I think your mainboard is a variant of this. That model is out of production, but this product from the same OEM (Foxconn) comes highly recommended. (I have one.)  The one you picked out should fit, too.

The physical dimensions are the same; it's the front panel wiring that's the question, but I am betting that Dell didn't modify it. If you're unable to wire up the front panel,  you can RMA the board back to Newegg for a refund or buy a new case and move over all the usable parts from your 530s.

Actually this is a long story.

my desktop is out of order now, and I guess that is on account of the mother board.

When I turn on, the computer freezes at the Bios screen which shows a big Dell logo and everything doesn;t work including a mouse and keyboard.

So I opened the case and took a look at it then I found there is a yellow solid light on, on the board. I asked about this to my friend, he answered

it seems the motherboard has a proble. you need to get new one.

So I was buying a replace board at Dell.com, but they sell it  with too expensive price althoug the OEM board doesn;t show a good performance.

Thats why I want to upgrade my board with CPU. but it seems very complicated thing......  I may get the Dell OEM board if there is nothing which perfectly fits to my case.

Or, I better change my case too..

I just saw a mainboard you recommended. It looks nice but one more problem I have here is that I own 2 pairs of 1 giga DDR2 667 memories, and I want to keep those

in my new system. However, it seems DDR2 667 memories doesn't fit into the Foxconn mainboard. Right?

But there aren't many DDR2 667-compatible boards with four memory slots, so you might consider buying a cheaper board like the Foxconn G31 and using the savings towards a 4gb memory kit.

That should fit.

I see that it is available with Acronis TrueImage as a combo deal, something you might want to take advantage of.
