Upgraded PSU for Optiplex 9020
Hello,
I just received my Optiplex 9020 MT and was hugely disappointed to find out that I can't upgrade the PSU. The motherboard lacks the 20/24pin connector. It has a custom 8pin connector (I don't believe its the EPS12V connector). I managed to find a PSU that fits the chasis (Corsair cx600) but now I can't power it on with the new PSU. I require the new PSU to power my GTX760 card.
Is there any 500W PSU out there I can swap it to? If not, I will be forced to return this PC back.
Regards,
A.F

The OptiPlex 9020 Mini Tower power supply is a Dell proprietary unit, due to it's wiring harness, as is the motherboard.

I highly doubt that PSU will work! The one in the 9020 is a custom one and I had no luck finding one online. The motherboard power connector looks and fits like a EPS12V connector but it's not. Even if you connect the EPS12V connector to that socket and try to power on, it won't.
Here's a pic of the special connector:

^^ If you have a connector like that and it DOESNT have yellow and black wires, then it will work.

^^ The off-white power connector seen on the mobo is the one where that special connector from the PSU plugs into.
Then there's another custom cable that plugs into the black connector which feeds power to the ODD and 2x HDD

^^ This is the other cable u find from the PSU which goes to the 12V connector on the mobo

Thanks for your update. So the 8-pin is for MB power while the 4-pin is for CPU? I will check my own as well as other PSU such as TT, Delta.

I'm rather peeved with Dell. After giving me the run-around, first telling me they were sending me a replacement power supply, then telling me they didn't have any in stock (mine was damaged in removal), anyway, after all that, I handed the issue off to my corporate IT folks, and they've tried working with Dell, but they're getting the same answers...the pin-out is some Dell proprietary secret...they don't have any they can sell me as a replacement...I'm stuck with this piece of nonfunctioning junk until I can solve this. Their customer service team is now involved, so I'll update if they do the right thing (crossing my fingers).
Not anticipating a useful response, SURELY there's a way I can figure out which wires do what!! Right??? Here's my own diagram of the plug...
So, does one of you that has a functional power supply want to get the old multi-meter out and test this thing???

What are you talking about. The powersupply that comes in the Optiplex 9020 Mid-Tower clearly indicates that its maximum output power is 290W. So, unless the label on the side of the powersupply is lying I'm not sure where you are getting 460 watts?!?

It does fit. Barely! I just got the 9020MT, and an EVGA GeForce GTX 760, and removed the Radeon card, popped off the adjacent cover, wiggled the USB cables out of the way, and snugged it down. Now if I only had a power supply!

So what is the verdict? no psu upgrade possibility? or did you find someway to fix it?
No way to convert a regular ATX connector to this propiraty 8 pin connector?
Kind Regards
Erik.

I have no comments about the use of the Add2PSU.
Except that according to their video, it seems to require a full tower chassis and two power supplies.

I can't believe dell would do this.....guess its time to start looking at other vendors. Thought maybe when Dell went private again things would get better but guess not.

I believe that the only upgrade to the Optiplex 9020 power supply may be the Precision T1700 power supply which is 395 Watt. I think they share the same connectors. Although I have not tried it. Also an upgrade from the original 290 watt to the 395 watt is not the greatest increase.
If you really need more watts for a graphics card the best thing to do would be get the ps2 connector (<$20) used as a switch to turn on second power supply at same time as the primary supply, a male sata to female molex wire (<$10) to connect to PS2 and a second power supply ($30-90) that has enough connectors for your specific graphics card usually either 1 or 2 six pin 75watt, or 1-6pin75 watt and one 8 pin 150 watt.
Supplies:
1. PS2 (<$20) Used to turn on Secondary power supply at same time as First
2. Male Sata to female molex adaptor (<$10)
The Internal unused Sata power supply of 9020 connects to sata adaptor and molex connects to PS2 (Simply when power from the primary supply energizes sata cable it turns on secondary supply via PS2)
3. Power supply ($30-90) Be sure has enough 6pin and or 8pin connectors to power graphics card of your choice.
Enjoy the Graphics

The way around this is to put an AUX power supply in that fits into the 5.25 inch Bay and provides 450W for Video cards.
