Upgrading my Dell XPS 710
Hi i purchased my XPS 710 in 2007 and im thinking of upgrading my processor from a 2.4ghz im unsure as to the model i think its also called E6600 to either of these
Intel
Intel Pentium Dual Core E6600 Socket 775 3.06GHz 1066FSB 2MB Cache Retail Box Processor

hay thanks for the quick reply but unfortunately the motherboard has only a 1066 clock speed and i don't know if that processor would be supported

I spoke to tech support on Sunday due to my motherboard on my XPS 710 being fried, again, (second time in 1 - 2 years) . While on the phone, I asked about upgrading the processor as well and was told that the Intel Q9450 processor was the one to get. (Core 2 Quad Q9450. 2.66GHz. 12M. 1333MHz) I found it at memorydepot.com for $227.
I hope these upgrades work out.

Ok so i have found a better processor but im still unsure whether my motherboard can handle it its the E7600 or E7500

The 710's motherboard was limited to the 1066MHz FSB, but as that used to mean that you had a 65nm processor, I suspect that the bios (or the VRM depending on how to look at it) on your 710 won't be able to adjust to the lower voltage that the E7x00 processors use (due to their 45nm die size), but maybe someone else has tried a 45nm processor (that uses a 1066MHz FSB) in the 710 and could chime in on their success (or failure).

thank you for response though it was not what i was hoping for im coming around to the idea that my only upgrade option is the Q6700 (i was hoping a 3ghz or more would have been possible) any advice would be greatly appreciated oh and price is a major factor as i dont think im going to find a QX6800 for less than £200 the joys of being a student

You can only use 65nm chips on the 710. The highest processor you can use is a Q6800. The FSB is limited to 1066. and like mentioned there is no way to adjust voltages or anything so overclocking is virtually nonexistent.
