Video Card Upgrade on Dimension 4400

The new AGP version of the Nvidia 6600 GT card is for sale for around $ 225.00 .  Some members have this card on our 4400 system, and are very happy with it.  http://www.newegg.com  This link has the card.  Look towards the left hand side and look for Video cards near the bottom of the list.

The computer came stock with a nVidia GeForce2 MX 64 MB RAM. the question i was wondering is can I use a graphics card with 4x/8x support since the highest my computer supports is 4x. if you know please reply

Yes, anything listed as 8x will work, as far as the AGP slot goes.

The Geforce 6600GT SR45 mentioned is an excellent card.  The current price/performance leader.

The 6600GT is as good as it gets for a Dim 4400 owner. Have had mine 4 about 2 wks and I love it.

I'll chip in by recommending that you avoid the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I have a Dimension 4200, and the Radeon 9800 has apparently fried my computer (see other thread). Also, be sure to check the power requirements before you plunk down money for a new video card. If I remember correctly, the Dimension 4400 has a 250 W power supply. You don't want to be out $200+ only to have to spend another 80 - 100 for a PSU (many of which do not fit Dell's case design).

ok that info was helpful but one more question, how come when i look in the book it says something about 4x and nothing about 8x. From what I understand in the previous explanation, its an agp slot and it can accept and will operate a 8x card? thanx for the help!

Dell's 250 watt power supply should be able to handle a Radeon 9800Pro, but the Geforce 6600GT is a better card, about the same price, and draws less power, so it's kind of a moot point :)

And yeah, any card that says it's AGP 8x is also compatible with your AGP 4x system.

The 250 watt power supply on our Dell systems are the mean wattage and not the peak.  Dell underrates its power supply and other's may not.  The peak power is around 345 watts as stated numerous times from the Moderator in the past.  Other's have this card and p/s and are doing just fine.

You don't need a new power supply unless you're putting in a $500 video card like the Geforce 6800 Ultra. (There is one site that caries them, don't remember it off hand.)
