Vostro 200 CPU upgrade?

Is there an up to date list of processors to choose from to upgrade my E6550 processor in my Dell Vostro 200 Mini Tower (not the slim thin tower)?

Thanks

If your Vostro 200 was shipped with a G33M02 motherboard and a 300w PSU, it will only support dual core processors.

The largest processors are supported, by the Foxconn G33M02 motherboard:

Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8400, 3.0GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8500, 3.16GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8600, 3.33GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0

If your Vostro 200 MT has G45M03 motherboard and a 350w PSU, then the following Core 2 Quad CPU's are also supported,

Yorkfield Quad Core Q9400, 2.66G, 6MB, 1333FSB, R0
Yorkfield Quad Core Q9550, 2.83G, 12MB, 1333FSB, E0
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 (2.33 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 (2.5 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 (3.0GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.16 installed, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.

Is there any way I can find out what motherboard it has?  I pressed F2 whilst booting the PC to get to the BIOS menu and the only thing that resembled any kind of model code was DXZS23J, which I googled and didn't find anything.

I forgot to mention, I upgraded my PSU to a 460W PSU (www.coolermaster.com/product.php).

Thanks for the reply.

I've found the original PSU that came with computer, it is 300W.  Does that mean my motherboard is a G33M02?

oh, is that because the old quad core aren't that much better than my dual core, or is it because the rest of my pc is just slow and I wouldn't see the full difference that a quad core has to offer?

Yes, it would indicate the default motherboard is the G33M02.

You could also, check the model/part number that's located on a label atteched to the motherboard.

even if you go from your dual core to the old quad core you aren't going to see much a huge jump in performance

shesagordie, in the link you gave me earlier, you said this:

--------------

Does your Vostro 200 have either a G33M02, or G33M03 motherboard?

If your Vostro 200 was purchased with either a Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core or Celeron processor and a 300w power supply, this system usually has a FoxConn G33M02 motherboard, that only supports Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core and Celeron processors.

If you have a Core 2 Quad processor and a 350w power supply, you have the FoxConn DG33M03 motherboard.

--------------

But to me you say it's either the G33M02 or the G45M03.  Am I missing something?  I just want to make sure the details are correct before buying a processor.

Thanks

That is correct.

The Dell Vostro 200 MT series has two variants of motherboards, both made by Foxconn and based on the G33M.

The G33M02, supports up to Core 2 Duo processors and the DG33M03, supports up to Core 2 Quad processors.

Vostro 200 MT systems sold with Pentium Dual-Core or Core 2 Duo processors can not be upgraded to Core 2 Quad processors without adding at least a 350W power supply and swapping motherboards to the DG33M03 motherboard.

The reason the G33M02 doesn't support Core 2 Quad processors is because it only has 6 voltage regulator ICs, the DG33M03 has 11.

Ah ok thank you, I just wanted to check, given that it will influence what I buy.

My motherboard is a G33MO2, so am I correct in saying the best CPU for this motherboard is the E8600?  Out of curiosity, is this the G33MO2 CPU compatability list? www.foxconnsupport.com/cpusupportlist.aspx , or is that for a different motherboard?

Thanks

If the E5700 is supported, I'd think some of the other Wolfdales are, too.

For example, I had an E6300 working in a 220s, and it was fully recognized.
