Vostro 230 Video Card/Power Supply Upgrade?
Hi Folks,
I have a Vostro 230 with integrated video and want to upgrade to discrete video. It has a PCI express slot. I would like to be able to play recent games adequately, but I don't need top-notch performance. I am worried about being able to get a video card that will work with my scrawny 300w power supply. I tried a couple of older card in my machine and they didn't work so now I am paranoid about getting a card that will work. Tech support said that they probably weren't getting enough power from my PSU.
1) Are there any reasonable (performance-wise) video cards that will work with my existing power supply?
2) If I have to upgrade my power supply, can anyone recommend one that is at least 400w that will work with my Vostro 230?

I just ordered a new Vostro 230 mini tower and upgraded the graphics to their suggested Nvidia GT 220 1 GB DDR3 graphics card. Apparently it can work on the system judging that they suggested it as an upgrade.
I did a bit more research and turns out the 220 GT can work pretty well on the 300W power supply. Requires just 58W maximum power from the graphics card alone. Search ebay for a DELL GT 220, i am sure they are pretty cheap.

Not a bad suggestion, Fubag, but I need something with a bit more power than the 220. The fact that this is the best video card available to come with the Vostro is part of what tells me I may need a larger power supply. That card would be fine for most 2D business applications, but it won't run anything muchmore demanding than that.

i am running a AMD HD 5570 in one sytem and an AMD HD 5670 in my other system ... both dell Ins 546 systems have a 300w powersupply.

A good friend recommended this and I'm probably going to get it. He also said i most probably would not need to upgrade my power supply which is nice.
