What is a TAL.ERR error?
I just received my 8300 XPS today. Right out of the box, on the very first power up I had problems. It says it is setting up for the first time and then goes to a command prompt. In order for me to get it to the desktop, I have to wait for it to go through a command prompt run and then type "desktop". It does this every time it restarts. I checked through some of the logs and ran across one that even stated two warnings during the OS install. I can't believe this wasn't checked closer before shipping and am very disappointed with this system. One tech I contacted decided to disable all my devices and then reboot my comp. That didn't go well. Glad I remembered my DOS commands. Typed MSCONFIG and enabled all to get it running again. The second tech thinks the hard drive is bad and is sending me one with the OS installed and the backup disks. All test on this thing pass fine. Wonderful! But I have to send the defective one back and if it gets "damaged" during shipping it's my fault! I should send the whole thing back!
Can anyone tell me what TAL.BAT does? Apparently Dell doesn't know, or at least in India they don't and what can be done to correct the problem?
Below is part of the TAL.LOG. I keep finding more error entries in other logs as I go on:
[TAL.BAT] Set NOBULATE State To 0
[TAL.BAT] OS FIST Has Failed. Not Running WebNow. Continuing To PostVPE...
[TAL.BAT] Append Text To File: UP:\MFGMEDIA\ERR
[TAL.BAT] Copy File To MFG_MEDIA: C:\fist.err to UP:\MFGMEDIA\fist.err
[TAL.BAT] Append File: C:\DELL\fist\os_dump.log to UP:\MFGMEDIA\LOG

FIST is first install. Goofing with the devices in bios caused FATAL Errors on first install.

Hi 2Grim4u,
I would do an OS restore. Reset BIOS defaults, make sure your drives and boot devices are configured properly, then run the OS restore.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah, I think during the OS load there were issues that occurred. Don't know why it wasn't picked up during initial testing. When I get the restore software, I will reload the OS and see what happens. Osprey4, I will definitely check the bios settings. Was too ticked off last night to continue messing with it. She almost went out the window!

You don't need "restore software". There is a Dell Restore Partiton (PC Restore) on the hard drive that is accessed by F8 at power on. This will restore the PC to the original factory condition (or what it should have been).

Thanks for the reply.
Seems to be a problem with that. When I hit F8, it brings me to the advanced options screen where I can enter various safe mode options and such. No mention of a restore option other than through a network. The Dell tech and I beat that one to death. If I could remember how to access the partitions, I could look, but I've gotten old.
