What is the difference between x8 and X16 memory organization?

What is the difference between x8 and X16 DDR2 SDRAM memory organization? Can I add X8 256MB memory bank to computer that has installed x16 256 memory organization?

I have a Dell 4700.

jh10,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Here are the specs on the memory for the 4700 system.

Memory blank spacer blank spacer

blank spacer blank spacer
Type 400- and 533-MHz (PC2-3200) DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM non-ECC
Memory connectors four
Memory capacities 128-, 256-, 512-, or 1-GB non-ECC
Minimum memory 128 MB

A NOTE indicates important information that helps you make better use of your computer. NOTE: Up to 128 MB of system memory may be allocated to support graphics, depending on system memory size and other factors.

Maximum memory 4 GB

Dual Channel Mode

The Dimension 4700 memory is configured to run in a enhanced dual mode configuration at the factory.

Even though matching pairs are required for the system to run in Dual Channel mode, the system will still function if running in Single Channel mode or with an odd number of DIMMs installed.

Intel define the modes that the memory bus operates in as:

  • Single-Channel Mode: One or two DIMMs populated only in either channel A or channel B.
  • Dual-Channel Asymmetric Mode: Both channels A and B populated, but with differing amounts of memory in each channel.
  • Dual-Channel Interleaved Mode: Both channels A and B populated with equal amounts of memory.
