Where can I get the correct driver for XP SP3 SATA driver for Dimension 8400?
Hello,
I am having a hard time finding a SATA driver for my Dimension 8400. I tried what is on the Dell driver site, the Dell OEM XP install CD driver, and one that supposedly works from downloadcenter.intel.com. Not matter what I install it will end up Blue Screening sooner or later during the XP install. Usually sooner. I do still have a floppy drive, so any floppy disc version is fine.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for very useful info. I did get the Dimension 8400 up and running. But the configuration is different than what I thought it would be....but it is up and running.
I had not worked on it for a few days, so I fired it up and forgot to change the BIOS back to set the SATA operation back to AHCI. It came up and continued finishing the XP SP3 install. Finished, rebooted, and no blue screen. It had been several days so not sure how I applied the driver.
Here is what it ended up being-
BIOS - SATA operation - RAID AutoDetect / ATA
In Device Manager - Intel 82801FB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2652 / Driver version Microsoft 5.1.2600.5512 (date 7/1/2001).
In Device Manager - Intel 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F / Driver version Microsoft 5.1.2600.5512 (date 7/1/2001).
I have installed updates, apps, AV, rebooted several times, .etc. I have not had any problem. So I will leave it as is.
I am going to print out all the posts and file them away just in case.

If you are not using RAID, enter the system setup, scroll down to drives, press Enter or + to expand the drive menu then down to "SATA Operation", press Enter.
Change the SATA operation mode to "RAID Autodetect/ATA" press ESC to save and exit the BIOS.
Then windows XP should install without a problem.

To add to what Bev said, watch for the prompt to press F6 to install the SATA driver from the floppy diskette, early in the XP install process.
And, very importantly, when XP starts its first reboot from the HDD after the install, you have to intercept it by pressing F2 to open BIOS Setup again. Now change SATA Operation back to AHCI, save the change and exit Setup. It should boot normally after that.
Nice to see another D8400 fan out there! Mine has run perfectly since 2004 (knock on wood!) :emotion-1:

Thanks much to both responses. Unfortunately I am not having any luck. I did change the BIOS option in SATA operation, then tried the Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition, v.4.5.0.6515, A01 driver from the Dell site by creating the floppy driver disk from the downloaded exe.
After pressing F6 I selected 828 1FR SATA AHCI Desktop UCH69. This is one of the two selections from the floppy. I did try both options since nothing was working. After XP installs and reboots I changed back to AHCI in the BIOS setup. The Windows XP splash displays for about two seconds and blue screens.
I have tried so many combinations but the end result is always a blue screen. Obviously I am missing something.
I would appreciate it if I could get more specific driver version, etc. There is only one drive, so I do not care about using RAID. This computer still runs, but I have to install a different drive in it.

What version of XP are you installing and what Service Pack? It might help if you tell us exactly what the BSOD says.
I have XP Pro on this D8400, so if it's of any help, in Device Manager, I show:
Intel 82801FR SATA AHCI controller: driver v6.0.1.1002 (dated 7-6-2006) which is on the Intel site. There may be a later version but that's what's running on my system. But, if you don't have XP Pro, it may not be the right one for you.

Strangely, that version number shown in Device Manager for the AHCI controler is listed under Chipset for the D8400 on Dell's site....

Have you considered drive imaging with the likes of Acronis TrueImage?
Also, note that support for XP is ending in five months, so if you're going to go to this much work, you might consider installing Windows 7 instead.

The 2002 driver is Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition, v.4.5.0.6515, A01 which would not be compatible with xp sp3
This list shows the product name change, from current to past versions:
Earliest I would recommend would be
Intel® Matrix Storage Manager 7

"BIOS - SATA operation - RAID AutoDetect / ATA" is NOT AHCI but it is the recommended install mode.

Is that right?
If you installed the SATA drivers from a floppy during the XP install by pressing F6, the D8400 won't boot if BIOS is set to RAID AutoDetect/ATA. It has to be set to AHCI, which is what you said you did to finish the XP install. So I'm confused....:emotion-7:

Yes, I was totally surprised when I brought it up and the XP install began coping files. I thought well I will wait to see how long it goes, might as well see what happens. So when it rebooted OK, I wasn't sure what happened. Rebooted and looked at the BIOS SATA Operation and it was set to ATA not AHCI. But as I said it was working and I had spent too much time messing with it so I left it alone. The last I remember is doing the F6 and loading the driver from the floppy. But I had a bunch of floppies at that point so the best I can tell you is what it says in Device Manager.
It is still working fine and since it is quite old I will leave it as is and see what happens.

D8400 will work perfectly ok, if you don't install the SATA drivers. You just lose the advantages of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager technology.
If BIOS is set to ATA and it boots, I'm guessing either you didn't actually install the SATA drivers or they didn't install correctly.
Have you installed these in order now that XP is loaded:
You need all of these in that order for full/normal function on a D8400 that's running XP.

I happen to have the identical Intel 82801FB in a Poweredge 800.
I'd add that the Dell XPS is exactly as it was in the first place.
Intel 82801FB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers working fine with drivers in Windows XP.
I've read that the update to Intel 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop ICH6R) using Intel Matrix Storage Manager provides little benefit speedwise.
NOTE: the Intel 7.0.0.1022 driver install Read Me only lists 82801FR under Desktop ICH6R.
