Which memory for my new 8300?..need advice

PC3200 is DDR400 and PC2700 is DDR333. If your 8300 has the 800Mhz CPU and 400Mhz RAM, you need the PC3200.

What processor did you buy with your 8300?

The ICH5R has nothing to do with the RAM.

I asked Crucial that exact same question on their online help forum.  They said it doesn't make any difference, but with a slower FSB, then go with PC2700.  Dell's official memory is PC2700, so I would go with that one.

It wasn't basic.  Get the PC3200 memory as that is the proper memory for your machine.  Dell puts in the slower memory to save money.  To configure memory for your computer, click here for Crucial's memory configurator. The ICH5 does not control the RAM, its the i875P northbridge that does this.  The RAM should parrallel your front side bus, so;

PC 3200 is 400 MHz which matches well with 800 MHz Front Side Bus, espicially in dual channle mode

PC 2700 is 333 MHz which can be matched with a 533 MHz Front Side Bus

Cheap DDR400 uses higher latencies(ie CL3) to achieve the higher speeds. You gotta pay the big bucks for low latency, high speed RAM, and even then I doubt if the Dell BIOS woundn't puke it out.

Probably because most dells systems except for the 8300 with 800 MHZ FSB use PC 2700, so by making it their official RAM, they cover most bases.  Maybe?
