Why has Dell quality gone to pot?

I have a Dell computer and if you do something drastic, like have a browser window open for a few minutes, the computer does a complete freeze.  The only way to get a response is remove the power.  Removing the power from a running computer is not what I recommend.  There is NO Dell support for any of their products anymore.  Does anyone know a brand of computers that is still reliable?

Sounds like a software problem.

If you post the exact PC model and version of Windows somebody may be able to help you.

BTW: Have you scanned thoroughly for malware recently?

Is having the browser open (which browser?) the only thing that causes it to freeze?

Reboot and press F12. Go to Utilities partition and run the hardware diagnostics, especially RAM and extended hard drive tests. Post any error messages here.

Have you tried running the browser with all add-ons disabled? In IE, Tools>Manage Add-Ons. Disable all of them, close the browser and reboot the PC.  If that helps, you  can re-enable Add-ons, one or a few a time to see if you can find the offender.

If you're comfortable working inside the case, reseat RAM modules and PCI cards in their slots and use some canned air to blow out all the dust bunnies. Always power off, unplug and press/hold power button for ~15 sec before opening the case.
