XPS 400 Will Not Read A Windows 10 64-Bit Disc

I own an XPS 400 desktop that currently runs the 32 bit version of the Windows 10 Insider Preview OS. In the Control Panel - System it says that my XPS 400 has a "32-bit Operating System, x64-based processor" but when I put a brand new Windows 10 64-bit in its CD Drive and have it boot up and wait for it to ask me to press any button in the BIOS it loads the logo and after a while the CD Drive just stops and nothing beyond that happens. In the BIOS I have tried to do F12 - Boot From SATA Drive but when I do that it tries to read it and then it just boots up like it normally does, completely ignoring the disc. How can I have my XPS 400 read and install the Windows 10 64-bit from the disc? Or is there any other way I could have it run the 64-bit Windows 10?

64 bit versions of windows 8.1 and 10 require more than NX to work. Another issue I have found with MANY older dells is that the Region code is not set on the DVD. This will cause some localized versions of DVD to not work but XP CDs work because there is no region code in CDs. In the case of the XPS400 you require a pentium D 900 series Pressler CPU and latest bios.  915 to 960 will work as long as you have the copper heatsink. XPS 400/Dimension 9150 does not support newer processors like Core2 duo.  There really is no point to 64 bit version of windows on an XPS 400 due to system ram limitations. Retail versions of windows 8.1 home or Pro come with both 32 bit and 64 bit media so this is not an issue.

Dell Dimension System BIOS, A07 View details

XP051A07.EXE   Windows/DOS (514 KB)

The Pressler 900 series vs Smithfield 800 series can do LAHF and SAHF as well as CMPExchange16 which means it works fine if you have a 900 series Pentium D.  That means you can run 64 bit windows 7 or 8 or 10 just fine.  Max useable ram will always be 3.25 gigs regardless of cpu or os being 64 bit or not.  This is a chipset limit.   The Precision 380 is better than the XPS400 due to supporting newer chipset and 8 gigs of ram.

I got my 8.1 pro upgrade back when it was $38.  If they want that they should buy it immediately because there will not be any in the future.

WINDOWS 8.0 is depricated and the Purple box 8.1 home and Blue Box 8.1 pro are the available everywhere retail options.

After July 31 2015 8.x may be gone forever as well being replaced by Windows 10.

Pentium D 915's are very cheap as is the copper heatsink.  The ram and windows license are the expensive parts.  You update the bios to latest then change the CPU and replace the thermal paste.  The Dual core pentium D is an improvement.

Explain what disk you are asking about. There is no official windows 10 disk released yet and if you burned the win 10 Preview iso file to a dvd, you must boot to the dvd-cd drive to install it--NOT the sata drive which is a hard drive-- and lose everything on your current windows drive. And it doesn't make any difference what is on a dvd or cd. The disk itself is not 32 bit or 64bit. It just has the installation files for installing windows 64 bits. You cannot upgrade to a 64 bit version of windows 10 from your 32 bit version of windows. A clean install of windows is required to switch bits from 32 to 64. You lose everything you now have on the drive by doing that.

BTW you cannot just copy the iso file to disk. You have to burn the image to dvd to make it bootable using a utility for that purpose. Wait until the official release of windows 10 July 29th  to make sure you can qualify for the free upgrade. Remember you have to have Windows 8.1 or 7 sp1 installed to qualify for a free upgrade.

I burned the Windows 10 64 ISO to a blank cd and I tried both of my Cd drives and neither worked. There are files for 32 and 64 bit version of Windows 10 on their website. Before I installed Windows 10 I used Linux Mint because while it had Windows XP Professional it got a blue screen of death. And I figured that a clean install would be required to use the 64.

Many of the processors in this system are below minimum system requirements for Windows 8.1/10 64 Bit as system requirements were elevated from Windows 7/8 64 Bit.
