XPS 420 line-in not recognised
I'm running an XPS 420 with vista and an integrated High Definition Audio 7.1 device for my audio. For some reason the mic port on the front is completely useless, but the headphones socket is fine. Could a driver update fix this? I'm having real trouble working out what drivers this thing needs. Its got such a generic name.
I've tested the mic in another machine, and it works fine. On the XPS nothing shows up in the Recording tab of the sound control panel. I'm told something should appear there, even if nothing's plugged in.
Can anyone help?
Thanks, Xar

I've tried that. Installed from the website, installed from the disc. It says I don't have that sound card. I just have the HDS device.

First, you need the Dell supplied sound driver - non Dell drivers will either not work or not work correctly.
HERE is the Dell SigmaTel audio driver. Install this driver and see if it helps. You should have mic, Line in and if you are lucky "System Mixer" in the Recording panel.

Do you happen to have the optional SoundBlaster sound card, instead of the Integrated (on the motherboard) audio?
Where do you have the speakers connected? on the rear motherboard I/O panel or down in the expansion card area of the PC?

Speakers are connected to the integrated sound in the back, no optional sound card.

What does the Device Manager show for this device? "working OK" or does it show an error code (and what is code).
To access Device Manager, hold the Windows Key down and then press the Pause/Break Key. The Device Manager can be accessed from Task List in the next panel.

Uninstall the device in the Device Manager then restart Windows and it will be reinstalled. If there is a corruption between Windows and the device this usually fixes it. RIGHT click on the entry for the Device to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (do not uninstall the drivers). Restart the PC.
