XPS 720 CPU UPGRADE
Hello,
I have the Q6850 processor in my machine. Does anyone know how fast a processor can be used to replace the existing cpu? I am thinking of future upgrading. I know how to replace the cpu, I just don't know where the upper limit is on what cpu can be put into the motherboard.

Funny , wanted to post same question .
Bought my XPS720H2C with QX6850 in january 2008.
Last week got my XPS420 with QX6950 and this one runs much faster then the XPS720H2C.
Would like to upgrade now the XPS720H2C into a QX6950 .
But is that is possible and what does it need besides the CPU ?

Welcome to the dark side :}! (as in "left in the dark" by Dell :/)
Even though not officially supported the latest Penryn-based Quad cores from Intel 'should' work (at your own risk), see our post about running a QX9650 in an XPS 720:
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=Tech_Talk_XPS&message.id=42046&query.id=159536#M42046
Also, you can vote for our "plea" for Dell to provide an updated BIOS to officially support these CPUs at Dell Idea Storm web site, see:
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10079297/Properdecent_Bios_for_flagship_XPS_720_desktop_eg_A06
Best of luck!

Thanks for the very good advice .
Indeed , I meant upgrading the XPS720H2C QX8650 into QX9650 as the XPS420 came with.
