XPS 730 H2C: is the QX9770 worth the extra expense?

I'm a bit on the fence when considering which CPU to get for a XPS 730 H2C. The QX9650 is a fine quad CPU (3.0 GHz) and the QX9770 shows better results in benchmark tests, but it is 500$ more.

So, for a computer that will be used for graphics processing and gaming, is the extra 500$ worth it?

What's the community's opinion on this?

IMHO no.... unless you just have to have the better CPU ;)

Even if I get into Folding? :smileywink:

Thanks for the reply MoneyGuyBK.

Somehow, I sort of expected you to be the first to answer... you're ALWAYS online. :smileyvery-happy:

Especially if you get into Folding!!! cause you need the money to pay for electricity :smileysurprised:

Sore subject of course, When are you going to? (You asked for it ;))

BTW... your 720 could easily do two SMPs and two GPUs for 6k-8k in points per day, maybe more :smileytongue:

I could even set you up with Folding via remote !!!

Peace

I was considering getting into Folding until my 720 H2C broke down (too many problems to list)... So I'm now getting an exchange for a 730.

Once I'm setup and ready, I might just contact you again with this. Turns out I'm going to get the QX9770 after all, we'll see how it goes.

That extra $500 is cheaper than you'd be able to purchase that CPU seperately.  Also, it will run cooler and has a bigger L2 cach.

But... if you have the option for a basic CPU (not the extreme) then possibly it might be possible to get the QX9770 cheaper somewhere else.

It´s definately not worth it IMO.

Get a Q9450, raise the FSB clock to 400MHz (1600MHz quad pumped) to run it at the speed of a QX9770 - it doesn´t even need a voltage increase to do so. A much cheaper option than the QX9770.

The ¨Extreme¨ processors are only really for die hard overclockers who need the unlocked multiplier for more versitile overclocking. If you´re not an overclocker steer clear of them.

Edit: I´ve just seen you´ve decided to get the QX9770. Anyway that´s my 2 cents...
