XPS 8300 won't install drivers
I did a fresh install of windows 7-64 bit on my XPS 8300 using a windows 7 disc. Once the install finished i went in to start downloading and installing the necessary drivers so i could update it, etc. Finding and downloading the drivers onto a flash drive was simple...BUT none of the drivers seem to take. This isn't my first rodeo, i re-install and update computers semi-regularly, this is the first time i've encountered one that absolutely WILL NOT install ANY drivers. I've tried installing chipset drivers prior to installing anything else, i've tried installing BIOS updates...and i get 0 results.
According to my Device Manager i need:
Ethernet Controller
Network Controller
PCI Simple Communications Controller
SM Bus Controller
As i said, i've found all the drivers for those, and no matter how i go about it, none of the drivers will actually install...the files unzip, but i get no installation windows, no background installation...nothing.
PLEASE HELP!

SM Bus Controller is part of the chipset. Chipsets must be installed first. Without chipsets, the others either won't install or won't install correctly.
Are you following the installation instructions correctly?
These are the instructions for the H67 chipset (note there are 2 chipsets needed for the XPS 8300):
Installation Instructions
Hard Drive Installation (via WinZip) with Setup.exe File for R284334.exe
Download
1.Click Download Now, to download the file.
2.When the File Download window appears, click Save (Windows XP users will click Save) this program to disk and click OK. The Save In:
window appears.
3.From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
4.If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file
icon appears on your desktop.
Install
1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R284334.exe.
2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R284334.
Write down this path so the executable (I.e. Setup.exe) file can be found later.
3.The Self-Extractor window appears.
4.Click OK.
5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor window is still open, close it.
6.Click the Start button and then click Run.
7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R284334 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

After a fresh install of your Windows 7 OS, simply go to the Windows Update and check all updates available. You will be able to get all the drivers for your system on those updates. Windows 7 has this feature.

Hi Weddle,
Welcome to the Community.
Step 1: Please make sure the Windows Installer Service is not set to Disabled in the Services. It should be set to Enabled/Automatic.
Step 2: If the Windows Installer Service is not in listed in the services list, we need to manually install the windows installer service using this registry patch. Kindly click on this link to download the registry file:
www.winhelponline.com/.../msiserver.zip
Save this file on the desktop because you will need to merge the file from the registry. (Open registry - click on File - Import - select the registry file - Open) Restart the system.

Normally your response would suffice, but considering i have no ethernet or network controllers...i can't do that.

Thank you for the response.
I agree with what you said and sorry I missed it earlier. You can copy this registry file on a different system, save it on a flash drive and run on the XPS 8300.

thank you RoHe! your response got the ball rolling and installed the chipset, i haven't had one where i had to manually run the installer in a LONG time and completely forgot that MIGHT be the problem. After i got the chipset it led me to the source of my problem and got the remainder of the drivers installed in no time flat. Thanks again guys!

Try to use the disk called DRIVERS AND UTILITIES that came with your Dell XPS 8300.

To anyone that owns one of the machines I would recommend buying a network or wifi card, due all windows updates, and when its done take the card out or use it! It is a nightmare to install drivers in! Its a nice machine but "Come on" I never saw a machine that I couldnt get the drivers in! It had me changing flash drives, re installing windows, installing the drivers over and over! It will be the best 20 dollars you ever spent! Even doing the chipset drivers first they wouldnt install!
