XPS 8700, Motherboard On Off

Hello There,

I am writing this on my 14 year-old computer running XP.  I am 68 and decided last year to wipe out some retirement savings and get a top of the line computer that would last me until after I am underground.  My Dell XPS 8700 with some Solid State memory died 2 days ago after slightly more than 1 year of gentle use.  There is no warranty.  When turned on, the computer  turns off within 2 seconds, then turns on, then off, ad nauseum.  According to Dell Support, the motherboard is shot.  Although I bought the computer and monitor from Dell Canada for more than $1850 there seems to be no way to order a new motherboard (let alone know how much one would cost) to be sent here so that a local computer store can install it. Has anyone had a similar problem?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The DELL GXJ67/KWVT8  motherboard wont be easy to find.

Mb svc kit (Order for base 5hk1d, 61kc6, 8y7rx, contains mb KWVT8)

There is a sticker that has the part number for which one you have.

Have you contacted Dell to see what they would charge to repair it?

If you prefer local, check on Ebay.  There's a new 8700 motherboard there for $169 plus $25 shipping to Canada.

Hi,

I am from Dell. Please PM us your system tag#. Will provide you a quote for the repair which would include an onsite engineer as well.

Regards

Thank you for your reply.  I also saw a motherboard that might be a match on eBay.  In the description the seller said it was for parts because it had the same problem.  I will keep this option open; I just want to insure that if I hire someone to install it, that the "new motherboard" isn't faulty.

The first contact with Dell (who informed me that the motherboard was faulty) said that they couldn't help and I would need to contact a local dealer.

The second contact with Dell said they don't ship to Canada despite the fact that I ordered it from Dell Canada.  She did say that the price of a new motherboard would probably be half that of the computer!

I do see a response following yours from a Dell representative, but don't quite understand whether I should post the info to him online.

Thanks Again,

Bryan

Don't think I'd simply just accept a phone diagnosis that the motherboard failed...

Symptoms could suggest a power supply issue which is a much less expensive fix.

I'd take it to a reputable local PC shop and have them diagnose it for a fixed cost -that's agreed on in advance of the checkup so you won't have any surprises. Only after that diagnosis you can make the decision what comes next...

And if you choose to respond to Dell's request for info. Click Dell-Hema's name in that post and look for the option to send a Private Message (PM). Do NOT post any personal info in this open forum.

I'm waiting for Dell-Hema to ger back to me.  It's amazing that I'm able to post.  I'm glad I didn't chuck this 14-year-old XP-era computer.  It has only 0.6 gig of RAM and less disk memory than most cheap flash-drives these days.  Doesn't say much for the new pricy computer that just got past its warranty date.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to provide excellent advice.

While you're waiting for a response from Dell-Hema, try this:

  1. Power off and disconnect power cord from rear of PC
  2. Press/hold power button for ~30-60 sec
  3. If you use a power strip or surge protector, remove those and set aside
  4. Reconnect power cord to rear of PC and plug directly into the wall outlet
  5. Reboot

Thanks RoHe, it was worth a go but it didn't work.  Meme chose: it turns off (or goes into sleep mode) then on, then off ...forever and ever.

I have encountered the same problem on June. Dell replaced the motherboard since it's still under warranty, but the same problem came back somewhere on Oct just after my warranty expired. Contacted Dell, and was told to go to any local PC shop to get my PC repaired!

Hello YEOCKEE,

After going through 3 motherboards it turned out to be a faulty i7 processor.  I have forgotten the clue that it's not the motherboard that is at fault but seem to recall that if the processor fan operates, the fault is due to the processor.  The odds of this are VERY, VERY slim.  Somehow Dell got some bad chips from Intel ...who should come good for the replacement.

All the best,

Bryan

Hi,

Finally got my PC fixed. All this while, I thought it's the motherboard that caused the issue but according to the technician- it's the graphics card. I have since replaced the graphics card with a new one and it's working fine now.

Thanks,

Yeo
