XPS 8910 Support Wake On Lan?

What version of BIOS?

Just guessing...

Do you have to change Deep Sleep settings in BIOS so the NIC isn't turned off when the PC is shut down?

And/or do you have to put the NIC as first in the Boot Sequence in BIOS?

Wake from hard shutdown (S5) and hibernate (S4) does not work any more. This is by-design Windows behavior.

This change is due to Microsoft design changes in Windows 7 8 10.

For optimal Wake-On-LAN operation, power management setting should not go below Sleep (S3)

Aka Set to S0 or S1.

There are now multiple system, device power states and proper configuration of the system power state will determine success in waking the system from LAN. The many Dell systems have a BIOS Deep Sleep Control option that must be disabled before configuring the operating system power management settings to Wake-On-LAN. Boot the system and press F2 at the Dell Splash Screen to enter the system setup. Expand the power management section and highlight the Deep Sleep Control. Click DISABLED save settings and exit the system setup.

Once the system setup is configured (If required), then all that remains is to configure the Windows system shutdown to the required power state. To configure the power button to shutdown then system to Wake-On-LAN states complete the following steps:

1. Click Start > Control Panel > Power Options in Windows 7, Type "Power" then click Power Options from the start screen in Windows 8.
2. Click Change Plan Settings for the selected power plan then click Change Advanced Power Settings
3. Click the + next to Sleep and then the + next to Hybrid Sleep set hybrid sleep options to OFF
4. Click the + next to Power buttons and lid Then the + for Power Button Action select Sleep
5. Click OK, then Close the remaining Windows

These systems should wake from the System Power States: Sleep (S3) or Hibernate (S4). The SHUTDOWN (S5) power state is not supported in Windows 7 and SHUTDOWN (S5) and Hybrid SHUTDOWN (S4) power states are not supported in Windows 8/10 for Wake-On-LAN.

I have five systems that "do work". 

Two are Win81 home, one Win81-pro and two Win10-pro. None are 8910s. Two are Dell XPS 8700s.

It does not work out of the box, and changes needed to happen in both the BIOS to disable the power saving feature that powers off the NIC card in S5. Also, Windoze settings to allow a magic packet to wake the system need to be enabled for the device..

None have S4 enabled, and all can be woke from S5 or from S3.

Wake-on-LAN behavior

The wake-on-LAN (WOL) feature wakes the computer from a low power state when a network adapter detects a WOL event (typically, a specially constructed Ethernet packet).

WOL is supported from sleep (S3) or hibernate (S4). It is not supported from fast startup or soft off (S5) shutdown states. NICs are not armed for wake in these states because users do not expect their systems to wake up on their own.

Note  WOL is not officially supported from soft off (S5). However, the BIOS on some systems may support arming NICs for wake, even though Windows is not involved in the process.
