XPS one A2420

When I press the power button on the XPS, I can hear the hard drive spin up as well as hear the CD Rom try to find something to boot on, but never get anything on the screen.  I replaced the hard drive on direction of Dell Tech support, but nothing changed.  I re-seated the memory modules and all the cables.  Still nothing.  The beep codes I hear are 3-1-1.  I found where that can mean Slave DMA register Failure, but don't really understand what that means.  Nothing has been added or driver updated that might cause this, so I'm thinking the video card might be out or the MB is bad.  Anyone have a suggestion?  Thanks

Hi Acarnack,

I believe that 3 beeps indicates a motherboard problem. Contact Dell tech support and they should help you.

Here is the manual, in case you want to double check.

Thanks Osprey.  I think you're right.  I DID find some info on the beep codes.  But you've nailed it

I ordered one from a third party supplier.   Hopefully installing will fix it.

Thanks alot.

Hello Osprey,

I changed out the MB and am still getting the same error beep codes.  Remind me to never work on one of these all-in-ones again!  Guess it wasn't THAT bad, but definitely a chore.  Dell said it was the MB as well.  Even though it's not under warranty they chatted with me.  I gave them the beep codes and they said it was the MB.

What would you suggest I try next?  I've only seen a few processors actually go bad, so I'm thinking video card.

Any help is appreciated.

I was pretty surprised that Dell doesn't sell a replacement board and therefore doesn't have any instructions for replacing one.

Are still getting 3-1-1?

I'm not a fan of these all-in-one systems for that very reason.

Hello Osprey,

I changed out the MB and am still getting the same error beep codes - 3-1-1. .    Dell said it was the MB l.  Even though it's not under warranty they chatted with me.  I gave them the beep codes and they said it was the MB.

This afternoon I went down the local Worst Buy store and bought new memory.  Same beep codes.

I guess the only thing left is the processor.  I've looked around and can only find one E6500 233GHz with 4M cache running at 1333..  Seems there's a ton of the E6550, but not many 6500's.  They're both LGA 775 - do think the 6550 would work?

Anything else I'm missing???

Any help is appreciated.

I would bring it to a local shop for help. At some point, it's not worth throwing away more money on it. Sorry.
