XPS710 cpu upgrade
I am going to upgrade the cpu on my xps710. Currently using stock E6400 (2.13). I'm still confused about what will give me the most performance upgrade. I understand that the highest I can go due to 1066FSB is either E6700 or Q6700. Am i right that both of these are essentially "plug in and go" in my SPS 590 SLI MCP chipset? Also, I have read some articles -the one that comes to mind is an "Anantech" article that pointed out that the Quad core can be slower than the Core Duo in some applications.(This was a rather old article, but don't know how old.) Also, shopping around I notice that the E6700 is more expensive than the Quad-core Q6700! (..Don't know why that is...???)Sorry..this is getting wordy.... So.. 1. Are both the E6700 and the Q6700 compatible with my system?2. Which one would give the best performance? 3. If an application is optimized for multi-core performance, does that mean both Core Duo and Quad Core?

Both E6700 and Q6700 will work in your system. An optimized for multi core apps is not always optimized for more then 2 core. Almost all apps are optimized for 2 core now and a few for more. IMHO the best bang for the buck now is the Q6600, It's a lot cheaper then the Q6700 and even the E6700 wich is way to pricey for the performance that it give. The Q6600 only run a bit slower (2.4GHz). I have one myself and I don't regret it.

Thanks-I appreciate your help. I was leaning towards the Q6600 or Q6700. One more question..if an application is configured for a Core 2, will it use 2 cores of the Quad? (Kind of like an app that is not configured for a Core 2 will run on only one core.) Hope that question makes sense.. Thanks again, Al
