Xps 8700 hardware questions
Looking at the xps8700 i7 4770.What z87 motherboard does the 8700 special edition use? What is the psu rated at? Can the supplied psu handle a second gpu either in slu or for physx or would indeed to upgrade the psu? Is that something I could have dell do via phone ordering or something I have to do personally. Thanks!

Hi,
The XPS 8700 uses a Dell Lynx Point Z87 Chipset motherboard that supports the Intel fourth generation Haswell Processor. It has a single PCIe x16 slot and a second graphics card cannot be used either in SLI or Physx configuration. The Power Supply Unit is rated at 460W. You can upgrade to a latest graphics card either from AMD or NVidia.
You may refer the system requirements of the graphics card and then upgrade the PSU if the power requirements exceed the PSU ratings.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Hi Perlsyntax....I just bought a new XPS 8700 (not Special Edition). I also just made a lengthy post about my experience and how I upgraded my XPS 8700.
First, I decided to go with a GTX 760. Probably the best bang for the buck.
Second, I upgraded the PSU to a 600 watt Corsair CX600M. It is modular, so you only use the cables you need.
I also had 16gb of DDR3 1600 memory laying around, so I went ahead and traded it out for the 8gb that came with it.
I am playing BF3, COD Black Ops II and was playing the Battlefield 4 Beta....all on High settings. Ran like a charm.
You can see my very detailed post here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19528647.aspx

I am not sure of the exact model...I just know it is a Z87 chipset. What do you mean "tower game". Are you asking about the size of the case?

Ohhhh....sorry. Yes, it is definitely smaller than I am used to. I was going from an Antec 900 case. The XPS 8700 case is much smaller. And like I mentioned in my other review, the inside is snug, so be careful what video card you decide to go with.
I got an MSI Geforce GTX 760....it is the Twin Frozr Gaming edition. It has 2 gigabytes and is factory overclocked. I went with this because it only requires a 500 watt psu and it seems to be a pretty good value.
I am really liking the performance I am getting in BF3 and Black Ops II. And like I said...I played the Battlefield 4 Beta for a few days before they closed the Beta. BF4 ran great!
