adding memory

I purchased non dell memory from dell and when I put it in the computer stays black and doesn't start.  I need to put back the old memory to get my computer to work.  What am I doing wrong?  Or what do I need to do to get the computer to start after I have placed the new memory in?

I don't understand. You bought non-dell from dell! Are you sure it's compatable? If it is maybe you accidentally moved something inside case. Did you make sure you de-static yourself otherwise you can fry the mobo.

The best approach is as akbar.b has written is provide the model number computer you own and the type of memory you purchased. Those two items of information would be helpful.
