bootup delay - 2 minutes - Dimension 8100

Question

My Dimension 8100, factory configuration, has a consistent 2-minute delay in bootup before anything happens. It doesn't seem to be a Windows or software problem, because I have a black screen for two minutes before the HD even kicks in, and then I get a Windows bootup splash screen. After that everything is normal.

Any ideas of things to check to try to eliminate this initial delay? I have explored BIOS setup options, tried the fast boot option, no help. I don't see anything else in BIOS setup that might help.

Do you have any USB peripherals connected?  There have been boot up issues with some USB devices connected.    Message Edited by fireberd on 06-20-2003 05:57 PM

The first thing which I would check is to make certain that all of the connectors inside the box are properly seated, especially those which connect the hard drive to the mother board (but I would check everything while you are in there, including any PCI cards).  If a connector has started to come loose, it could be that it must heat up before a proper connection is made, hence, the delay in boot.  If everything is properly seated, then I would suspect that the problem could be a similar problem with the hard drive controller; but if that is beginning to go bad, the only cure is a new motherboard.

billrose   If you are using a USB mouse.  The 8100 had a problem with some versions of the BIOS, if a USB mouse was connected it would take about 2 minutes to boot.  The solution was to set the Mouse Port to Off under Integrated Devices in the BIOS.   Paul
