chipset heat sink
I've seen the other correspondence on "chipset heat sink not detected - System halted!", including methods for physical repair, and useful KB article.
I've got an Optiplex GX270 from July 2003. So 3 year NBD support ran out a year ago, and it looks like I can't talk direct to Dell.
The problem is the same as for many others, the pin on the motherboard has detached (and disappeared), so the heat sink clip is loose, and the power on test fails.
What I would like to know - is there any way I can disable or bypass that part of the power on test? Or is that a stupid question?
I guess the fallback is to firmly glue on the heatsink, and solder on a wire from the remaining pin to the point at which the disappeared pin was fixed to the motherboard.
By the way, this does seem to be a fairly widespread point of failure that Dell should be acting on?

No, you need to either reattach the U bracket for the 'Z' wire, to the motherboard or replace the motherboard.
