inspiron one 2020 doesn't boot

I have a customers Inspiron one 2020 that will not boot. It powers on and the dell progress bar gets about 4/5 the way and just stops. Computer did boot up fine but had a virus I was in the process of removing. I was copying the customers data to a flash drive and it got VERY slow. I decided to reboot into safe mode to complete the backup but when it went to reboot it started doing this. I have since removed the hard drive, swapped out memory, and cleared the cmos with the jumper. Still will not get past about 80% on the blue dell bar. If I hit F2 or F12 the set-up and/or boot selection highlight but it never goes to them. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hello PaulBradley,

I would suggest a couple of steps which would help us isolate the issue. Please follow the steps mentioned below.

  1. Releasing flea power:
Disconnect all the external peripherals from the computer including the ac adapter and release the flea power by pressing and holding the power button for 5 to 10 seconds. Turn on the computer and check.

  2. In order to boot the computer into One Time Boot Menu, restart the computer and keep tapping F12. In case it does, follow step 3.

  3. Run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics
It runs the test on the hardware components of the computer. Run the test and check if it gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action.
You may also refer to this video on how to run the PSA Diagnostics: http://dell.to/18woC5M

Awaiting your response!

Step 1 didn't work. I tried this several times. Previously I left the cmos reset jumper jumped with no power or anything plugged to it. This should have also done the same as step 1.

Step 2, I can't get that far. When I hit the power button, it starts to boot up, shows the small dell logo in the middle with the progression bar just below that, and F2 and F12 options at the bottom. I can hit either and they will highlight but will not go to either because the progression bar (post status bar) gets to about 80% very quickly then stops and will not do anything else.

Is there any key or combination to force it to bypass hardware check or to make it disable all hardware?

Hello PaulBradley,

In order to enter the Boot Menu, turn off computer. Press the power button to turn on the computer and immediately start tapping the F12 key repeatedly. Do not wait for the progress bar to show up.

Similarly, when the computer is turned off, press the power button to turn on the computer and immediately start tapping the F2 key repeatedly to enter the BIOS Setup.

Please try the steps and write back with your findings.

I have tried this several times, but tried it again for you. All this does is highlight the F12 Boot Options, but doesn't do anything. Still as soon as the progress bar gets to about 80% it stops and just sits there.

Hello PaulBradley,

Thank you for replying and apologies for the inconvenience caused. I would request you to re-seat the memory modules and check if that help. In order to re-seat the memory modules, please refer to the service manual: http://bit.ly/16gLALo (Please try the step only if you are comfortable).

In case the issue persists, please consider replacing the motherboard.

I tried this too. Even tried a good working stick from a different computer. Tried it without the hard drive installed also, incase that was hanging it up. Any other suggestions? This all started the day after the warranty ended.

Hello PaulBradley,

Sorry about the situation. This seems to be the motherboard failure and needs to be replaced. Since the computer does not have any active warranty, you may contact our Expired Warranty Services (this is for US based customers) and get the parts replaced.

Hope this helps!

You need to press F2 on reboot to enter BIOS setup, not F12, as was indicated above.

F12 menu only offers boot options, but not access to BIOS setup.

So, quite the long shot, but I have a computer with the exact same symptom progression. Infected -> cleaned up infection -> rebooted -> now system sits on POST at 80% of the progress bar. The only addition I have is that occasionally the screen has some graphic distortion at POST. I'm suspecting either bad processor or bad logic board at this point. Did you ever have any luck diagnosing this PaulBradley?

No, I haven't had any luck with it. I wouldn't think it would be the processor but I may try another one tomorrow. Probably have one here I can stick in it. I'll post results from that.
