logitech Web cam not working - any ideas?

ive got a Dell inspiron 531 - just bought 3 weeks ago running windows Vista home premium, 2gb RAM, nvidia geforce 8300GS video card.  i also bought, not from dell, a logitech communication STX web cam.  downloaded the latest drivers from the logitech web site but i still cant get the cam to work.  seems to install fine but all i get is a purple screen - sound seems to work fine though.   not sure if the issue is vista?  the drivers for the cam say they are vista compatible i am guessing because it shipped 3 weeks ago the video card is using the latest drivers - but will need to check.   anyone any ideas?   thanks

the new driver for the logitech STX camera is version v11.5 from the logitech download page... there is also a STX Plus web cam , same version of the latest driver..there are XP and Vista drivers , drivers are OS relient..

if u installed the logitech , Desktop Manager it should download and install new software versions , my quick cam orbit has same problen at times resting the camera with the quick cam software fixes the purple no pic..

i would see if your video card as the latest drivers,, otherwise see logitech support..

I just tried to install my quickcam messenger and I got the same issue. Logitech says to its not vista compatible. It suggests upgrading the hardware. Its a usb camera, what's so difficult to make it compatible? Is it DRM? Makes no sense other than a money grab.
I'm seriously thinking of upgrading to XP!

Logitech says STX web cam is vista compatible and have vista drivers ... disconnect the STX from the usb port  , reboot  PC , after reboot connect camera to the usb port , Vista should find the camera and install the STX software..

I am going to install the latest version of the video card driver but I dont think its that.  I noticed today I cant control any of the functions on the web cam from the control panel for the web cam.   i had a look at the box which my webcam came in and its says on the box its vista compatible - i might try a USC card to see if its a USB problem.  i  did see an article on the logitech site which mentions the webcams may not work with DELL computers.  since plugging the webcam into my PC its been blue screening with USBPORT.sys errors....

Just tried those drivers the v11.5  It didn't work. :(  Only got the built in mic working, no video.  Somehow the cam I have is so different it won't work.  The conspiracy theorist in me suspects its been deliberately disabled to force consumers to purchase newer products and to eliminate the cost of support with Vista issues.  I might go back to XP, in which case the current drivers would be fine.  I'm not a big fan of Vista, yet. Thanks for the help anyhow, Toronto699.

u are welcome , sorry i was of no help.. i hate vista to.. but for 25 bucks u could buy a new camera  and sell the one u have to an XP owner
