max hard drive for dimension 2400
Hello all! What is the biggest hard drive I can put in my Dim 2400? Thanks! Dim 2400 , xp home sp3 , 2.66 ghz p4, 1.280 RAM ati x 1300 vid card

The Dimension 2400 has had support for 48 bit LBA from its beginning. This means that there should be no limit so far as existing IDE drives are concerned. I have three Dimension 2400s, one of which is presently running a 320 GB IDE hard drive.
With regard to cache and RPM, a larger cache can help when Windows is swapping data into its virtual memory, and the faster the drive turns, the faster data will be read or written to the drive.

If you use a SATA adapter, upper limit should be between 1 and 2tb.

M'kay, what's the biggest I can use without an adapter? How much do SATA adapters cost? Thanks, dim 2400, xp home, 2.66 ghz p4, 1.280 RAM

A SATA card would run about $20. The Startech adapter looks interesting but I can't vouch for it.
Newegg still has a few EIDE drives available, but the maximum size is 500gb and the price per megabyte is higher. As an example, a 500gb Seagate costs as much as some of the 1tb SATA units.
I had great results with a Syba SATA card and a Dimension 3000, although I had to run a new LED to keep the HD activity LED.

Hard wired an LED to the drive? Do I want the biggest cache and fastest RPM? I thought I read on here 120 gb was the biggest you can get for a Dim 2400...? Thanks.........

That's what it is. When I increased the size of the hard drive on a win 98 machine, the whole computer ran quite a bit faster. I f I go to a 160 gb drive from my current 80gb hard drive, will I get any kind of performance increase? Hi, Mr. Shack! thanks

Neither Dell, nor the manufacturer tell if the adapter is single or dual channel. Any clue as to it's capability? And, I don't see any SATA cables for sonnecting two drives at the same time, like the ribbon three connector ATA (now PATA) connector. What about the SATA drive power connector? Is it the same as a PATA connector? Should it be obvious that I can't mix SATA and PATA hard drives on the computer because the IDE2SAT adapter occupies the slot on the Mobo?
Also, it was stated tthat the Dell Dimensiion 2400 Mobo has capability to handle large hard drives because it has a 24 bit thingy. Partition Magic tells me EZ-Drve is installed on my 40GB Maxtor original drive and that EZ-Drive it is corrupt, so Partitioin Magic won't finish opening. Can I use instructions I found on the Internet and uninstall EZ-Drive WITHOUT losing data and/or my Active partition holding Windows XP OS?
