mouse and keyboard freezing

Question

Hi  three times in the past seven days my mouse and keyboard just stopped working. I had to shut off the machine using the power button.  It happened on three different sites. My computer is running great except for this. I ran the usual    Spybot,Adaware, MS antispy and Mcafee AV  also Trendmicro Housecall  all came up clean  any ideas   thanks Chasbox

Is your keyboard and mouse a USB version. It just sounds like it by the way both freeze at one time.

Are you able to Ctrl - Alt - Delete to shut down with device manager? If so, you could have a second mouse atached to the PS2 connection for just such occasions (if you have one) until you figure out what is going on. That would also give you an insite as to a total system freeze of just the USB.

Have you installed some hardware or software just before you noticed the problem? Check your USB in device manager if the freezing items are USB. Any "!"

pc4me  Hi Both mouse and keyboard are PS/2 . I have not installed anything in a long time.  Ctrl-Alt-Delete won't work because the whole keyboard will freeze up. Uh oh... I have an HP that does the same thing and that is why it is on the rebuild table waiting for data to be removed and placed in a new brain box. I hope you do find an answer. There are so many possibilities that it is hard to find the one thing that causes it. I thought mine could be heat until it started doing it after a fresh cold start. I understand a memory error is the most common item but the memory checkers on my system come out as ok.

Is it stuck in a HD search by any chance? HD light staying on when it freezes?

I'll be hanging around to see if anyone else has a good place to check.

Well, I didn't have a better name for it.

When mine freezes, the hard drive light stays on like it is searching for data.

It just sounded the same as yours because everything is stopped but there are no errors recorded in Windows.

I guess every one needs a puzzle to work on.

Well it happened again. The mouse and keyboard froze. I could see the cursor blinking on the screen. I even unplugged them and plugged them back in. I had to push the power button to restart then the machine is fine  no errors show up. diag.lights are all green                 any ideas    thanks Chasbox  Message Edited by chasbox on 11-07-2005 09:59 PM

I would love to know what to do for this problem.  I have a whole computer lab with 34 GX270's, and it happens on at least half of them.  I don't think it 's a virus, because our virus protection system is pretty current. I have already tried swapping the mouse, and that doesn't seem to help.  Also, it doesn't happen ALL of the time.  When it does, I use the keyboard to TAB to 'Restart', then restart the machine.  That seems to clear everything up  - til the next time.  I am going to call Dell on Monday, since these PC's are still under warranty, to see if they have any suggestions.  I'm wondering if it could be static electricity.  That used to happen at a place where I worked several years ago, but unplugging and plugging the mouse again used to resolve it.  Now unplugging doesn't do any good.  By the way, the mice on these PC's are USB. I would apreciate any suggestions.

Well, I went out and bought a new optical wireless mouse. It is made by MS. Let's see what happens. I am replacing the Dell mouse that came with my computer
