multimedia audio controller
Hi, I am having a similar problem to other people and I think I've done what I'm supposed to, but to no avail. Here's what I've done. If anyone can shed some light on where I went wrong, please let me know.
Don't know a lot, but computer was a little slow, so I went to add/remove hardware and got rid of what I thought I didn't need. Also, did the disk defrag, disk clean-up thing and cleared the history etc. Ever since then, I have no sound. The multimedia audio controller has a yellow question mark and exclamation point next to it.
I did a litlle research and decided I need to download the driver for it. Went to Dell support(I have a dell dimension 3000) and downloaded the driver, but it still does not work. The device manager says I have no audio device installed. Please, please help if you can. I've been without sound for two weeks!! Aauurrggghhhh!!! andrea

Reboot, and at the Dell screen press F2 to enter "System Setup" and check that "Integrated Audio" is Enabled.

You need to install the files you downloaded. Double click the file to run the install.

Thank you both for responding!!! I'm grateful for the help.
This is what I did. I did the reboot and the integrated audio is enabled. I went to Dell support, typed in my service tag. It brought up a list of drivers. I chose Chipset software Install Utility and hit download. It asked if I wanted to save. I said yes. It saved to "My documents." Then I rebooted and went back to support and chose the ADI 198X Integrated Audio. It asked if I wanted to save. I chose yes, and it saved it to "My document."
I still have no sound. Should I have done anything else once it was saved to my documents? Anymore suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated, and I will follow your instructions. Thanks again!!! andrea
Forgot to mention, I do not know what the "BIOS" is. Is this something else I should address?

Not knowing what all you uninstalled with the "clean up" it's hard to tell what all is missing.
Are you following the Dell installation instructions, exactly, when you install the drivers? Does the drivers install successfully? Were you into the BIOS (Setup) and changed anything? - e.g. disabled the Integrated Audio?
If the driver will not install, download the Intel chipset drivers and install them first, restart the PC and then install the Dell sound drivers.

My initial response was about are you following the Dell instructions when installing. Obviously it was overlooked.

Yes, you are right. I did overlook it. I think it's because I did not make a distinction between downloading and installing. I guess it didn't really dawn on me until later that those were two distinct steps. I'm getting better at understanding some of this computer "stuff," but obviously I have a long way to go!! Again, I really appreciate the help!!! Thanks a million!! andrea
