new hardware dfu 0.4.0.0

Question

We have a xps 410. Windows XP Media Center   Under device manager we have 'other devices'  dfu 0.4.0.0   It says it is not installed correctly but we have no idea what it is.   The reason we discovered it is that our card reader (sandisk) quit reading our camera card.   So we have two problems --- what is the other device dfu 0.4.0.0 and should we eliminate it or reinstall or????   And we need to install the proper driver for our card reader to work.   Thank you. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

same problem just came up today after updating some drivers and now the reader stopped working, hopefully Dell will have a solution shortly.

Dell tried a remote access repair with various drivers and concluded the reader was bad.  They are sending a new one ---- will be interesting to see if that solves the problem.

It wasn't until I installed R152639 that this new thing started coming up trying to install DFU 0.4.0.0. It asks me to put in the install disk, which I don't have, and then when that doesn't work, it says 'No solution is found for this driver problem.' *shrug*

I had the same problem with my XPS 720 this evening after installing R176603(TEAC - Card Reader Firmware) and R176587(TEAC - Card Reader Driver). Perhaps I should have rebooted after the firmware update (as prompted :) ) before updating the driver but there you go. Anyways, it's fixed now. Here's how I got it all going again:

1. Run Device manager -> View menu -> Show hidden devices.

2. Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and delete any and all GREYED OUT (also called "ghosted" ) items called "USB Mass Storage Device". Note: If you can't see any, you will need an environment variable called "devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" set to "1". Here's how: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539

3. Reboot

On Windows startup you should see your PC re-installing the drivers for any items you've "deleted". Relax, deleting greyed out items does not remove any actual drivers from your computer, it just deletes from the Device Manager. The next time Windows sees your "new" hardware, it will automatically install the required driver. Basically this process just reverts the PC to a time before it first discovered the hardware items you deleted, EXCEPT this time it has the right drivers. You did install drivers in the first place, right? Er, because if not then that's your problem.

I installed the firware upgrade from R176603 and the driver from R176587 but windows did not recognize the device.

Then I removed all old usb devices from the device manager and uninstalled the new driver. After a restart windows reinstalled the standard driver and it works perfectly with SDHC cards now. :emotion-2:

The system I am working on is a Dell E510. I reinstalled Windows XP. I installed all of the drivers that I could, except obviously for the 13 in 1 card reader. The device that needs installing is the DFU 0.4.0.0. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for this several times and enabled the "flex bay" device in the BIOS according to another kb article. When I attempt to install the 4.0.8 version of the firmware (according to the service tag) it fails installation basically saying that you cannot install the same firmware twice. After the firmware fails, the device for the DFU 0.4.0.0 is no longer in the device manager, but now there is an entry for USB firmware. I can uninstall the USB firmware device that has appeared in the Device Manager and restart the computer to take care of it, but then the DFU issue remains/reappears. What am I missing here? There is one other driver for the card reader, but installing that does nothing. I just choose to repair it with no luck. I appreciate any help, but I have not been able to use anything here yet.

I forgot to mention that it does not list the device in the device manager either. Is there any way that you know of to roll back the firmware so that I can attempt to reinstall the device? The device was working properly before I reinstalled XP so I can only assume that it is NOT the card reader itself that is bad...

I updated the drivers (first) and firmware (second) on my second hand XPS 400, which eventually caused this problem. First I tried Jason's solution, which didn't work, second I reinstalled the drivers, didn't work. Then I tried flashing the firmware again. It said the version was 00.04 (sound familiar?) and halfway through the process, it told me 'Update needlessness' (great grammar) and said the update wasn't necessary. Still, it trudged on, finally completing to version 04.08. This time, I clicked the Shutdown button right away, let it shut down and turned it back on manually. Then, like magic, it booted up, found all of the Teac card reader devices, and the rest is history...

from this link you get one error message ignore it, it will redo firmware to 00.04

it will tell you it is installing 00.04

reboot immediatly you shoud be good to go error should be gone, Jeff

I also had this problem with my Teac ca-200 card reader in my dell E-520 i tried the firmware update uninstalled in device manager several times but it just would not work finally I disconected the card readers sata cable from the mother board turned on the computer and after is was totally booted up in window I carefully reattached the sata cable and in installed the drivers and now it works fine This is a really weird fix but it did work for me after trying for two days to fix this problem i hope this might help someone else
