optiplex gx620 - hardware assisted virtualization?

We've got an optiplex gx620 with a 4-521 cpu.  The intel program says it doesn't support hardware assisted virtualization. We're planning to upgrade from windows xp pro to windows 7. Would we be able to upgrade the cpu to one that would support virtualization (and also 64 bit)?

Thanks.

I think this model is compatible with the Pentium D 960, which supports hardware virtualization. You'll likely need a different heatsink, however.

Thanks.

Is the reason it might need a different heat sink because of higher temps or because the current one won't fit?

We've also got a dell dimension 4600. The windows 7 upgrade advisor is saying that the driver for the graphics adapter isn't compatible. Is there a way to upgrade this? Also wondering if the cpu on this computer could be upgraded to the 960?

The 960 is a 130 Watt Cpu.  If you have the aluminum heatsink its for a 90W Cpu.

BIOS A11 is required BEFORE Changing the cpu.

Vt-x is there Vt-D is not.

The GX620 is not a dell ESX VMware server.

GX620 towers can go to Pentium D960 with a copper  performance heatsink and bios A11.

INTEL VT support is in the Chipset & CPU as well as the Bios.

It does not show up if any of the above are not VT Capable.

Q: Does GX620's BIOS A11 support Intel Virtualization Technology?

A: Yes.

If the CPU Does not support VT the option does not show up in the bios.

Not all Pentium 4 processors support VT  there isnt any approach.  Either the CPU has it or it does not.

The only way to get it is to change the CPU to a model that supports VT.

So that leaves

To find out if your Intel® desktop or mobile processor supports Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT), use one of the methods below:

Note

A processor with Intel VT does not guarantee that virtualization will work on your system. Intel VT requires a computer system with a chipset, BIOS, enabling software and/or operating system, device drivers, and applications designed for this feature. BIOS A11 on the 620.

If your BIOS includes a setting to enable or disable support for Intel VT, make sure it is enabled. For Intel® Desktop Boards, enter the BIOS by pressing the F2 key as the system starts.

I suggest installing a Zotac GT610 PCI or other modern PCI video card. There are no modern AGP video cards available.

Also wondering if the cpu on this computer could be upgraded to the 960?

This is a Socket 478, so CPU upgrades are limited. However, if you swap out the motherboard, CPU and memory, you can upgrade both CPU and video card in one move. The 4600 is a micro-ATX chassis, and aftermarket micro-ATX boards will fit.
