proprietary psu's

how can you tell if your dell is using a proprietary psu?i know they were manufactured between 1996-2000.who knows maybe they used all proprietary psu till they ran out then started using atx form factor psu's.

It seems the [4300?],4400,4500 & 8200 and above, the power supply units are ATX standard. 
The ones prior to these are not.

I don't know about the physical power supply, but look at the motherboard connectors.  If they are the standard Dell, and non ATX connectors, then the power supply is not 100% ATX.

i could always back probe and see voltage each cable is giving out.then match them w/ a standard atx psu

Or, you could use this adaptor, that can connect a standard 20 pin ATX PSU to a Dell proprietary motherboard, it can be obtain from  http://www.centrix-intl.com look for this " Part # DellCv" priced at $9.99 plus S&H
