The Core 2 Duo E6400 will work fine in the Insprion 530.  Osprey4 must have thought this was a Core 2 Quad processor since he was asking for the motherboard part# (some versions of the Inspiron 530 support quad core and some do not).

Hi Momack2753,

Need to know your motherboard. They came in a few different flavors.

If it's a G33M02, Dell part number 0RY007, it doesn't support quad core processors.

When I had my 530s, it came with a duel core E6550 CPU in it, and it had a FSB of 1333Mhz, though the FSB in those CPU are different, but it should work. Remember if you do swap, renew the thermal paste between your CPU and you CPU fan.

Would the CPU swap be much of a boost, if any, over the E5200? The E6400 (Conroe) is older 65nm technology, while the E5200 (Wolfdale) is 45nm and not only does it have a faster clock speed, word is the Wolfdales are faster than Conroes, clock for clock.

Yes, I would agree that the processors are about the same if you ignore clock speed.  So with the E5200 being 2.5GHz and the E6400 being 2.13GHz then I would say go with the E5200.  Or if you'll be buying a new one then it probably wouldn't be too much more expensive to go with the E5700 or E5800.
