ATI Radeon X1300 video card and blank screen with Windows XP startup

Here is my problem:  Whenever I try to start up video using the captioned card, I get video up until the time that Windows XP (SP3) starts to boot up then the screen goes completely blank and dark.  I can successfully start up in Windows safe mode only.

I have a Dell Optiplex 320 minitower and have tried installation of 3 different X1300 video cards.  So I know it isn't the card.  I've tried two monitors.  So I know it isn't the monitor.  I've tried several video card drivers from both Dell and ATI websites, so it isn't a simple case of one or a few video drivers.  It appears to be a conflict between Windows XP SP3 and the either all X1300 cards or their respective drivers.

The video card I am using now is the one recommended by Dell for my computer specifically.  It is Dell P/N HJ513, 128MB version.  I've also tried some Dell ATI Radeon X1300 Pro 256MB cards (P/N UJ973).

Dell technical support doesn't seem to be able to assist.  I also ran some video diagnostic utilities from the Dell resource CD and no problems identified.

Anyone come across this problem?

PS - My integrated video works fine; just can't get the video card to work.

Unfortunately Dell Chat support wasn't able to assist me with this, as I tried 3 sessions.  Once they came close though.  I eventually solved this one on my own by going first to the ATI website then basically doing a general internet search using my problem as the search key words.  So for anyone else with a similar problem, thought I'd share how I fixed this.  I had to disable the onboard integrated video.  My BIOS system does have a selection to allow the computer to "Auto" detect a video card and to give this precendence over the integrated video, but even with "Auto" switched on (which it was, and this was the one thing the Dell technician checked during a DellConnect session), Windows XP SP3 wasn't recognizing it.  It might be an issue with SP3, but not sure.

Anyways, I first installed my Dell 1704FPVt monitor on the video card (128MB ATI Radeon X1300), then entered Windows XP via "safe" mode.  I then went into Device Manager, opened up the intergated video, and disabled it.  I then shut down the computer and restarted normally with the same monitor/video card configuration, and it finally started up normally; no video problems.  I then shutdown and installed the 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro card, connected the monitor, and successfully restarted normally.  The computer automatically updated the video driver with the most current one on my computer.  I've been running fine with no problems.

Suggest backing up your files and system state first....just in case.

Hoagy, if you're still out there...  :emotion-9:

I've just installed a RADEON X1300 video card in my DELL desktop, and I'm getting the blank screen.  The problem you describe sounds exactly like the problem I'm having.

I'm not sure that I understand exactly how you fixed the situation, but something tells me you do have the solution to my problem.

Would LOVE to chat with you either on- or offline to see if I can get things working.

HELP!!!

oh yeah,

as usual people forget to switch the computer setting from onboard to graphic card after

connecting the monitor to the new graphic card.

For some reason, on certain models Windows defaults to the onboard graphics for the primary display. I had this problem with my 2350 and had to connect the onboard graphics to the VGA input on my monitor to get a display. Afterwards, I set the primary display to the discrete video card and all was well.

I agree. I, myself always forgets such step and was always complaining. Thanks for letting us realize that.
