Administrative Rights privileges/updates

How do I go about getting 'administrative rights' privileges  to my own computer?

My DELL desktop PC's sound just quit: I've been using this computer since 2005. HOW is it, now, after all this time 'not' a digitally signed software? Is this new?I cannot use Google Voice or hear any sound. Is my computer 'toast'??

I did a DirectX diagnostics on it following all the 'help' steps, This comes back:

'The file smwdm.sys is not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's windows hardware quality labs (WHQL). You may be able to get a WHQL logo'd driver from the hardware manufacturer' '

DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT =0x00000000 (error code)

My computer tech son says:

it was the "automatic" install that you don't have permissions to complete? You need the 'administrative password' so you can finish automatic installs and updates.

So sorry, but thank you. I am such a novice and a DIY person I stumble around in these places like a drunk blind woman! I still don't know where to go...is there a 'Technical Forum' button or site I missed here in the dark?? My language for this is even worse! Any suggestions...I sure need help. Smile...

Seamon,

You'll have to repost that question in the appropriate forum as this one is a Customer Care Forum and we don't deal with technical issues on it.

Sorry,
