CPU Upgrade

I have a XPS 8700 with the following configuration:

-Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz

-L2 Cache Size 1024

-NVIDIA GeForce GT 720

-32MB of RAM

I would like to know if I can upgrade the CPU to a i7?

Thanks

Yes - it will need to be a Haswell i7-4xxx CPU.   You cannot use the later Broadwell (5xxx) or Skylake (6xxx) CPUs.

The system uses a Socket 1150 (otherwise known as LGA1150) format.

Yes.

8700s came with a 4770 and a 4790 and I believe someone has put in a 4790K.

There may have been a BIOS update for the 4790. I have 4770s so I'm not certain what the minimum BIOS was for the systems that came with 4790.

A10 is a good safe BIOS if you don't need/want Win10 and also enables the GTX 9xx graphics cards.

4770's were definitely stock parts.

SR149 is the only S spec I know of.
