Deminsion XPS B1000

Hello Guys
 
Question here I still have the old operating system Window 98 Second Edition LOL yes I know I will upgrade the Operating System but my question comes to, I have a 1GHZ with 511MB Ram, So can I get the two modules (512MB) for 1GB or 2 GB ( 2X1) Modules?. Someone told me I need to have at least 2GHZ in order to get the 2GB Memory RAM. True?

No, not a limitation by cpu clock speed, BUT, I would check with the original documentation on your system for you motherboard limitation. It could be down at 512 MB or at 1 Gig. XPS B1000? You are rockin' with the oldies bub.  I'll check. ........Sorry, looks like the maximum memory on that motherboard is limited to 512 MB. The Dell Dimension XPS B1000 uses  and has 1 bank(s) of 2 socket(s) each for a total of 2 memory socket(s) . The Dell Dimension XPS B1000 comes standard with 128MB of RAM and supports up to 512MB of RAM . Choose from the memory modules listed above for guaranteed compatible upgrades for your Dell Dimension XPS B1000. Sorry, but an upgrade for the pc would be in order by this point. If you need to catch up with today's application needs, but then again it's all in what you need or want to do.

Besides the cap being 512MB, the XPS B-series used RAMBUS memory, which was (and is) very expensive. Buying 2 x 1GB (if even available) would cost a whole lot of money ( here is an example of 2 x 512MB RAMBUS memory for $470, so 2 x 1GB would probably cost over $1000.

I'd suggest to save up a bit longer and just buy a new system. Some days you can find sales where you can buy a complete new system (with LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse) for less than $400 and it would be a whole lot faster than what you currently have.

Hey, I've got tons of different Rambus here at my house. I'll check sometime tonight for the specs. I have from 256 to full gigs. They were pulled from a Gateway E4600, an older one, a Dell Precision 530, and some various excessed pc's over the last couple of years. I may be able to help. I'll be in touch, and it will be cheap, very cheap my friend.

Oh yeah concerning Windows 98, Here you go. Keep these exceptions in mind. And yes, I do have several Rambus 800's that should work, let me check further tonight. I'll pm you when I find out, and will only ask for a few bucks, not the bloated prices you see online. I know how ridiculous it can be.

EXCEPTION No. 1: For systems with more than 128 MB of RAM, setting a VCache maximum of about 70% of your total RAM is recommended as prophylaxis against run-away VCache growth in rare, specialized situations.

EXCEPTION No. 2: VCache increasing above 512 MB can create serious memory handling problems. If you have more than 512 MB of RAM, a VCache maximum of 524,288 KB (or a little less) is recommended. This is obtained by adding a MaxFileCache=x entry in the [vcache] section of SYSTEM.INI, where x is the maximum value you wish to set. VCache is limited internally to a maximum cache size of 800 MB. The problem is that, on computers with large amounts of RAM, the maximum VCache size can be large enough that it consumes all of the available addresses in the system arena, leaving no virtual memory addresses available for other functions such as opening an MS-DOS prompt. This problem may occur more easily if you have an AGP video adapter: The AGP aperture is also mapped to addresses in the system arena, and if VCache is using its entire 800 MB allowance and an AGP video adapter has a 128 MB aperture mapped, there will be very little address space remaining for other system code and data that must occupy the available range of virtual addresses.

EXCEPTION No. 3: For systems with more than 1 GB of RAM, the defaults in Windows 98 or ME can cause continuous rebooting of the computer, or to hangs or serial reboots during the Windows upgrade process. To resolve this problem, add a MaxPhysPage=40000 entry in the [386enh] section of SYSTEM.INI. This effectively limits the amount of RAM Windows can access to 1 GB. (Microsoft limits ths recommendation to systems having more than 1.5 GB of RAM, but the solution is to roll it back to 1 GB. See MSKB 304943.) Microsoft has now flatly stated that, “Windows Me and Windows 98 are not designed to handle more than 1 GB or RAM. More than 1 GB can lead to potential system instability.”
