Dimension 2400 intel 3d extreme graphics video card

My 12 year old son just saved up his money and bought a new dimension 2400. Now he has discovered that some of the games that he wants to put on his machine need a 3d hardware accelerator card that can run direct x 9. What can he do to upgrade his NEW machine so that these games will work. Thank you for any help you can provide.

i am 14  and i have a dell dimension 2400. the graphics card on it is 64MB. The type of graphic card is PCI not PCI EXPRESS OR AGP ONLY PCI! Also, when getting it, make sure the clock is 400MHZ.

Cart62526, just to clarify for you, the 2400 does not come with a video card. Your graphics are built into the motherboard and are considered basic. Try whatever software your son wants and see how it goes. If unsatisfactory, he can upgrade to a PCI video card, which will be an improvement, just not a huge improvement. Sorry, I can't say which card would have the specs you give.

According to his paperwork his 2400 came with an intel 3d extreme graphics video card. It did not say how many mb it was. He just got this machine a month ago.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 as well, I bought this card for my pc, its working quite well.
Its 256mb so your son can have a little more eye candy in his games, however it is PCI so it wont be as fast as an AGP or PCI-E card but it gets the job done. Its working well for me.

Cart62 --

In order to play the games he desires to play, he'll need to look into purchasing a new graphics card.  These are often abbreviated as VGA (video graphics adapters) or GPU (graphics processing unit).

You can trust the expertise of HTT Good above.  Just make sure that whatever card you buy, it is a PCI card ... and not AGP, and not PCI-Express, which is often abbreviated PCI-E.

Of course, you'll also want to make sure the card you purchase is DirectX 9.0 compliant.

Somewhere on these forums is a list of cards compatible with the Dimension 2400.  You might try to use the Advanced Search tab at the bottom of this page to search for: "video card 2400".

I strongly advise you use PriceGrabber.com to figure out the best available price on a card, or several card options.  You can sort any list on PriceGrabber according to PCI (as opposed to AGP and PCI-E) and by cost, etc.

The Dimension 2400 is a basic computer and not intended to be used for hardcore gaming. You should have done some research before buying it.

Also, can you tell us your other system specs? You can find them in Performance and Maintenance in the Control Panel. What processor do you have and how much RAM?

The name "Intel extreme graphic's " is a joke.  It is not extreme in any sense of the word.  Just a marketing word from Intel.  Integrated video was never meant for real gaming, just the basic system for word, internet, e-mail and the like, so a pci video card is required, and with those, you will still have to lower the game settings in order not to have what is called a slide show  ( Slow frame rates )....  If you are a gamer, always stay away from anything that has a integrated video.

You should go for either an ATi 9600 XT or a 9800 XT. These cards are very common.

Andreas,

Before you post pls read the actual posts.....  Those 2 cards are AGP and the original poster was talking about a D2400 which only takes PCI cards.......
